THEY HAVE SERVED THEIR COUNTRY. My name is Charley Williams, I served in the United States
Army. My name is Tiffany King and I served in the Tennessee National Guard as a Military
Police. My name is Merritt Tollison, I was in the Navy, both as a Surface Warfare Officer
and a Civil Engineering Corps Officer. My name is Jatoria Fair and I am in the Air Force
reserves. NOW THE STATE OF TENNESSEE IS GIVING BACK TO THEM, THROUGH THE VETERANS RECONNECT
PROGRAM. You go to school, and you get the book knowledge, but you do not really get
the hands on experience and I want to be afforded the opportunity to get the hands on experience.
I love to go to class, but I really love coming to MIFA, and I am glad that they took the
opportunity to give me this opportunity to proceed forward in order to continue to help
others. I think he appreciates the program because of his experiences, and he knows that
having this job and the experience with the people is a positive thing, so I think that
his life experience really adds to that, and it shows in his attitude. When you bring the
Veterans in, you bring people in with skills and knowledge that just normal students would
not have. I think it is a great way to apply the skills that you are learning in class,
it kind of reminds you why you are in the program and it helps you make connections
that might help you once you graduate. Every internship is a learning experience, and I
have definitely learned a lot. STUDENT VETERANS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS CAN EARN ACADEMIC
CREDIT WHILE GETTING PAID TEN DOLLARS AN HOUR. It helps out a lot with me being a college
student and I do not work, that extra money allows me a little flexibility. I am here
on the post 9/11 GI bill, and I would have hated to not be able to use all the benefits
I earned while I was in the Service, so this has been a great opportunity that, and now
with the addition of a paid internship that also counts as a class, that is, that is an
amazing benefit. Gas, food, rent, and definitely a little shopping, so the extra really does,
the extra money really does help. FUNDING WAS APPROVED BY THE TENNESSEE HIGHER EDUCATION
COMMISSION, AND THE STUDENTS SAY THAT THE PROGRAM IS HELPING THEM MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT
TO BEING A STUDENT. It was very difficult coming from a war aspect, you know, looking
for roadside bombs every day and now just going to have to see friendly faces and friendly
people, not only friendly people on the outside of my route, but friendly people here at MIFA.
I would say Jatoria has been a disciplined intern from the start, always asking questions,
she follows instructions, and she looks to structure. It gives you another day to look
forward to, and I look forward to coming here. In New York State. THE PROGRAM IS CARRIED
OUT THROUGH THE ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP OFFICE HERE ON CAMPUS. I think the UofM has been
great to work with. Well, I hope we have more people like Charley because of his attitude
and his work ethic, he is part of the team when he is here. One of the things that I
thought about doing. STUDENT VETERANS ARE PLACED WITH ORGANIZATIONS ACCORDING TO INDIVIDUAL
GOALS AND DEGREE PROGRAMS. The Veterans Reconnect Program is so amazing, I would recommend it
for any Veteran, any Veteran who is trying to get back in society and understand that
there is people out there that really care about you. THE APPLICATION CAN BE FOUND AT
MEMPHIS DOT E-D-U SLASH INTERNSHIPS. FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS, I AM ZACH ROBERTS,
SENIOR, FILM AND VIDEO PRODUCTION MAJOR.
