Hello I’m Rajiv Sharma-Drake, I’m the faculty Business Manager
for the faculty of computing, information system and mathematics
within this faculty we give a lot of thought to student support
we understand how scary it is when you first embark on
a course at University, so we ensure that in the first week
you have a good induction programme, which’s run by
academics and support staff, to introduce you to the faculty
to your study, but also to help you understand who to got to
if you need help. We do understand things may not always
run smoothly during your studies and issues may arise
and we have a dedicated team of student liaison officers
who you can come to for help. We put a lot of emphasis
on helping students get ready for embarking on their career
Placement is a very important part of that,
we’ve produced an employability road map for our students
which starts from the moment you walk through our doors
This involves workshops and one-to-one sessions
where we get you ready for the real world.
All our placement students have been very successful
not only in getting successful careers after they
finish their degree, but actually getting first class
honours degrees and we’re here to help you achieve that.
Hello, my name’s Peter Soan, I’m one of the admissions tutors
at Kingston University, in particular, I cover the admissions
for mathematics and statistics courses.
Here at Kingston we offer a range of maths and stats courses
from financially based actuarial courses all the way
through to medical statistics.
We offer both single honours courses, where you
concentrate on mathematics and statistics, or joint
honour courses where you combine your maths and
stats with another subject. The maths and stats
that you study, should really be enjoyable, so we focus
on a problem solving approach to mathematics problems
people after all, they play chess, they do Sudoku puzzles
crosswords and people enjoy solving problems
so we think that studying your mathematics should be fine.
However in addition to been fun, obviously
you want your course to be fairly useful and it’s true
that pretty much all mathematics that has ever been
discovered or ever been invented, has been applied
to solve some problems in the real world at some time
But never the less, some more traditional courses
which concentrate on old fashioned, if you like, pure
mathematics can have a slightly Ivory tower concept.
Here we try and focus on the sort of mathematics
that can be easily applied to solve everyday problems
so for example we ask our students to solve problems
in financial areas, like working out the correct price for
insurance policy, or for a traded option. We also look
at more general problems like, trying to figure out how
many people are gonna catch a particular infectious disease
or in another area, how long traffic queues will take
to grow or dissipate. This does mean that the content of
our courses is fairly career focused, obviously in particular
in the financial areas, it’s gearing people up for a career
in financial mathematics or particularly working as an actuary
But in other areas also, we look at things, which
are practically oriented and we aim to set you up for a career
using your mathematics in commercial industry.
Ok, so recent graduate from our courses
have been employed in a wide variety of areas
they’ve gone to firms, large firms such as GlaxoSmithKline
Blueprint Insurance, the office for national statistics
BAE systems, very large organisations like that and
also of course an extra smaller companies
So if you’d like to find out more about studying
mathematics and statistics at Kingston University
please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us
by phone, e-mail, or indeed popping in, particularly at any
of the open day we have coming up in the Autumn
Ok thank you very much for your attention and
I hope to see you some time in the future.
