LA NINA, A NORTHERN JET STREAM AND NORTH ATLANTIC WEATHER COULD ALL AFFECT THE WINTER OF TWENTY
TWELVE. U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE METEOROLOGIST BRAD RIPPEY SAYS THE LA NINA WEATHER PATTERN
COULD CONTROL OUR WINTER WEATHER.The typical effect of La Nina is to suppress the southern
jet stream and that robs the jet stream of moisture and leads to drier than normal conditions
across the southern United States.BUT A NORTH ATLANTIC SYSTEM IS CHANGING THE LA NINA AFFECT.
nd that’s why we’re seeing some unusual circumstances across the U-S so far this winter.
We have not seen the barrage of storms that you might typically expect across the northern
plains and the upper Midwest.BUT RIPPEY SAYS THE NORTH ATLANTIC SYSTEM SHOULD WEAKEN AS
WINTER CONTINUES.We will evolve into a snowier pattern across the northern Plains and the
Northwest and I think that’s likely as we head a little bit deeper into Winter. We’ll
see a big change in the weather pattern across the northwestern quadrant of the country.
HOWEVER A NORTHERN JET STREAM COULD ALSO CHANGE THE LA NINA AFFECT.That would not allow the
cold air to make deep plunges into the United States. It really just whisks it away across
southern Canada and the other thing is we would continue to see drought relief across
the southern areas that we would not normally see during La Nina.
IN WASHINGTON D-C FOR THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE I’M BOB ELLISON.
