112 years ago there was a city named st.
Francis oops I meant San Francisco the
residents of the city lived in peace
probably however there was one thing
that every resident feared earthquakes
on April 18th 1906 residents of San
Francisco were just waking up in the
morning to begin their daily routines
when an earthquake shook their tiny
worlds although only lasting a minute
it caused severe destruction to San
Francisco and surrounding areas the
quake was caused by a 270 miles slip
between the Pacific and North American
tectonic plates on the San Andreas Fault
it was determined to be a 7.9 magnitude
earthquake with the epicenter being 2
miles off the coast of San Francisco
around 3,000 residents were killed and
28,000 buildings were demolished damages
exceed 500 million dollars and 250,000
people were left homeless the main cause
of the damage was actually not the
earthquake itself the earthquake caused
gas lines to burst creating a huge
fire
firefighters couldn't combat the fire
because the earthquake also broke most
of the city's water pipes the fire
lasted for four days until rain finally
put it out the government supplied the now homeless citizens
with food water and shelter while parts
of San Francisco were being rebuilt not
many changes were made to combat the
future earthquakes since they didn't
know how earthquakes were made this
earthquake was recorded to be one of the
largest earthquakes to happen along the
San Andreas Fault fun fact
to combat the fires without any
available water firefighters tried using
TNT to demolish buildings in the
spreading fires path
