Mulholland started in the eighteen seventies as a dry goods store
my great grandfather started the business with a partner
I grew up working in this store, been here
my whole life
working for my grandfather working for my father and his partner
you know I've always love the grocery business I like seeing the customers
I like having so many different things to do
I received an email
about the Dream Big Grow Here contest, it was something that I easily could have
missed or just erased, and I thought I really
think this is something that I could do well in.
The first round of the Dream Big Grow Here contest
is on a regional basis. We moved onto
the Southwest Iowa Regional Finals and we won the five thousand dollar business grant.
When I got to
the competition, when I got to EntreFest,
I was extremely nervous, shaking.
About an hour before the contest,
calm took over
Some of the other finalists gave their presentations
and I remember that I was
just absolutely wow'ed - it was a learning opportunity for me
I got up on that stage
and I felt good and I felt powerful
What makes Mulhollands different?
many small town stores are little more than a glorified convenience store
but we offer items that can't normally be found in a small town
things like fresh poultry and seafood Certified Angus Beef and premium pork
we produce nearly 20 types of handmade fresh and smoked sausages
home-made bacon, smoked salmon fillets - our Swedish potato sausage
alone
brings over 100 customers per month to Malvern during the winter season from
at least four states
at twenty five years ago I left the family business
and shortly thereafter my father and his business partner split
and dad let the store at a bar family after more than a century
it was always my dream to but the family name back on the business
the recognition in Press that I receive
from winning a regional contest brought us many new customers
including the biggest order ever. If we win
the state contest will use the prize to expand the capabilities
of our line of especially meat products and be able to fulfill orders that we've left
on the table in the past
I gave my presentation and I was able to sit back
and and enjoy the evening and then we sit back and
and get to the nervous part when Kim Reynolds gets up and she tells
who won third place and I thought they did a fantastic job
and then she tells who won second place
and then...
...announced that we had won
and the winner is, Mulholland Grocer!
well I mean I put my head down on the able and cried. That $10,000
was huge for this business
Dream Big Grow Here
it's the most fitting name that there could be
it is about your Dreams it's
about a small business owner an entreprenuer, somebody that wants to
start a business
they have their dreams- I had my Dream of putting my family's name back
on this business
and it all depends on how much work you want to put into it- it depends on
how much your dream means to you
