The ruling Saenuri Party will field three political heavyweights for the Seoul city
mayoral race in the upcoming June local elections. Representative Chung Mong-joon , a former
presidential candidate, officially declared his bid for the Seoul mayoral election on
Sunday. The seven-time lawmaker however made it clear
that he will NOT run for president in 2017 if he wins.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik is set to throw his hat into the ring upon
his return from an academic visit to the U.S. Former two-term lawmaker Lee Hye-hoon already
announced her bid last month. The winner out of the three candidates in
the ruling party's primary will face incumbent Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon of the opposition
Democratic Party.
