Hello, I want to thank you for being here.
I would like to explain some information
about a course that I would like for you to consider taking.
This course is called
Social Entrepreneurship: A Grass Roots Revolution.
This course is about how to be
a social entrepreneur.
How to use innovation
to start a project
to help a category of people
about whom you care.
I am Dr. Keith Campbell
and I would like for you to please feel free to refer to me as Keith.
I am a sociologist.
This course is totally free
My university and I
are very pleased to offer this free course
to anyone in the world,
who has access
to the internet.
Students who study social entrepreneurship are on the cutting edge.
This is because of
several of the technological developments in our world today,
as well as, some changes in the delivery of services to people in need.
This course can be a first step to an entrepreneurial career or,
if you do not want a career,
this course can be viewed as a stepping stone to giving back to your society.
In your heart, do you feel anything compelling
regarding helping others in need?
It has been my experience that most humans,
at some time in their lives,
focus on certain categories of people in need and have a desire to help.
If this is the situation for you then this course might be of help to you.
The homeless...
Abandoned children...
Those considering suicide...
Feeble elderly...
Physically
or mentally challenged
...the complete list is very long,
(there are) probably
a couple of hundred issues that could be addressed.
Social entrepreneurship
involves using innovation
to start projects to help others in need.
Social entrepreneurs
decide who they help.
Whatever issue, to help others in need, is close to your heart
can be your social entrepreneurship issue.
Social entrepreneurship
involves a worldwide, peaceful revolution.
I am not a wealthy individual,
and I am not individually powerful.
I am a pretty normal, common, everyday person
and that is the type of person this course is for.
This courses for normal, everyday people, who care about others and
who would like to make a difference in this world.
You and I can change the world.
And that is what this course is about.
When I say "Change The World,"
I am not simply speaking figuratively,
I am very much speaking literally.
You and I, along with others like us in this world, can literally
change some of the direction of our world.
You don't need to be Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.
All you need to be is you.
As social entrepreneurs,
we have great power
as common,
everyday people.
This is a how-to course.
The focus
is practical.
If you want a course that involves a lot of theoretical
thinking and reading then this is not the course for you.
This is a practical, "hands on" course, it is a get your hands dirty course on the practical level.
What students will do...
You will learn social entrepreneurship principles.
You will study examples of social entrepreneurship projects from various parts of the world.
I have several very interesting examples for us.
You will develop an innovative idea on how to assist a category of people
about which you care.
You will subject your innovative idea to a scale that identifies strengths and weaknesses,
and you will prepare a written document reflecting your social entrepreneurship project.
The skills you will learn...
there are several specific skills but overall,
you will learn some of the core skills necessary to become a social entrepreneur.
Is their homework? Yes.
You will view my video presentations...
I hope.
I hope that you will read the assignments
that are on the internet.
I would like for you to prepare an early draft of a written document.
Are there tests?
Yes.
There will be three short quizzes.
People who take each free quiz
will receive a free digital badge or medallion
as long as you complete the course.
The entire course is free through receipt of the digital badge.
Added to the free course, at the end, there is a more extensive testing option
that involves a certificate and university credit if desired.
I am trying to be very brief in this first presentation because I know that you are,
probably most of your not sure if you are interested in participating
in this course so, I am wanting to be short.
The details of this entire course can be found in the course syllabus.
That course syllabus is on our website and
I will be sharing that web address in the next presentation.
This course...
I would like to slow down a little bit here because this is a personal note.
This course is a reflection of a part of my personal search for meaning in life.
I found, in my life, that one place to find peace and meaning, in a difficult world, is to help others in need.
But my course does not focus on philosophical issues, it is a skills course.
In this course my hope is that i will open a door to you.
I invite you look through that door,
see if what is on the other side looks good to you,
if you are daring you might tiptoe through it little bit during this course.
But there is a path that is through this door.
It is a path that I have found to be very meaningful in my life
and a part of the beauty
of social entrepreneurship is that it creates a win-win situation.
The number one purpose is to help people in need,
but along the way, those of us who were helping people in need, we seem to gain so much in our lives.
I invite you to walk with me on this social entrepreneurship path.
Welcome to this peaceful, grassroots, revolution that is changing our world.
