We started digital printing in 2005 but the growth for us has been quite phenomenal. We
went from a zero digital turnover to it amounting to 60% of our current turnover.
So what that means is we grew the digital business in less than five years which is
larger than our Legacy business which has taken 40 years to create. Our customers are
leading enterprise users. We provide a full suite of products for them for their general
commercial print requirement. Everything from business cards and operational print items
through to marketing material and direct mail. The great thing about the Indigo presses is
that they all print to a similar standard. Currently we’re using the 5000s with special
colors preloaded on one of the seven units. So that allows to use print a special Panton
color for our regular use customers. The other high volume applications tend to go on the
higher speed presses which are the 7000 series. The HP 7500 is currently the most productive
press available from Indigo. So it gives us the quality and the high speed of output,
and that’s key, particularly around peak season when we are supporting the most activity.
At that point our daily order rate can grow to 35,000 orders in a single day. With regards
to the production of short run printing as opposed to using litho process, the Indigo
process probably cuts production costs by two thirds. It enables short run printing
to become cost effective to the client. We’ve been involved with Lasermax Roll Systems’
PageReady TM finishing as a beta test site here at in the UK.
PageReady has benefitted with some huge time saving factors. The main element is being
able to finish work directly from Indigo. So you eliminate any prefinishing work required
such as guillotining. I would say probably adds around about 20 to 25% time saving on
applications that require finishing. On applications that don’t require finishing, things that
are just cut to size, it’s a 100% time saving because we’re not having to handle it again.
That allows us to deliver to the market much quicker.
We can now support a service level for a print on demand order which is within one hour.
As soon as the order comes in from the client’s website it can move to the front of the que,
be printed, finished, scanned, and packed at the end of the line. So it really is immediate.
HP Indigo Print Care has been a huge benefit to the organization. It allows the not so
experienced operators to find the root cause of a problem and fix it much quicker. HP engineers
have been a huge asset to the business. We would not be able to function without the
support that they give us on a day to day basis. We’ve seen a six percent increase
in up-time because of Print Care. HP Technology and HP Indigo have been crucial
to the growth of our business. Not only have they provided us with a print platform which
delivers digital printing without compromise and the highest quality that’s available
in the market. But what they also do which is really interesting is to support us as
a new comer to digital and explain and outline markets and areas that we should explore.
It really is a genuine partnership which is allowing us to grow our business.
The key benefit of the Indigo Press to me is digital print without compromise. It’s
that simple.
