Sure. This film made about Ed Roberts is not just about one man. Great man though he was,
itÕs not just about one man. This film is about the movement. ItÕs about citizenship.
The reason why it is important for African Americans not only to be a part of the movement
but also to take the time to view it is because it is very important that we understand that
this is a continuous struggle. After all ADA was a civil rights act. So it a civil right
to be independent in America. Every one in America is expected to be self-reliant; to
live the American dream. And people with disabilities are denied that opportunity simply because
they have a disability. I mean even myself I tried to do everything that was instilled
in me as a little child, as an African American. Again I was always told that I had to be better
than everyone else in order to get recognized. Well, I got the education; IÕve been able
to express myself. All of that I use and all of that could be taken away because of the
disability. Now as African AmericanÕs with disability we are the last to hear about anything
as it is in general society. WeÉweÉit is important that more African Americans get
up and speak out because we are always expected to wait on that check every month. And that
has never been good enough. It isÉit is
our obligation to be a little bitÉa little bit more than what is expected. We did it
during slavery. We did it during reconstruction. We did it during Jim Crow. We can do it now.
Thank you.
