We will demonstrate the Neerís sign to assess the possibility of subacromial impingement.
We ask the patient to fully pronate their hand, with the thumb pointing backwards, and
start full flexion as comfortable. If at any point there is pain, we record the degree
of flexion of the shoulder. This is a negative Neerís sign here.
If the Neerís sign is positive, then we can inject the subacromial space, ask the patient
to rest outside for 20 minutes or so, and then we reassess them. Should the sign become
negative, then we say that this is a positive Neerís test. The Neerís test is when the
Neerís sign becomes negative after injection in the subacromial space of local anaesthetic
and steroid.
