Gmail: How to block unwanted messages
In addition to emails from your friends and family, or favorite newsletters,
you may sometimes get unwanted messages.
Here's a few tips to keep them out of your inbox.
Tip 1: Report Spam
Gmail blocks a lot of spam for you,
but sometimes messages slip through the cracks.
If you get spam in your inbox, report it...
because the more you do it, the better Gmail gets at weeding out those annoying messages for you.
You can also do it quickly and easily, when you're checking email on the go.
Tip 2: Unsubscribe from messages or change your email preferences
If you use social media a lot or like to shop online,
your inbox might get a lot of social and promotional messages.
A lot of these messages have "unsubscribe" or "change email preferences" links at the bottom,
so you can opt out from receiving them again.
Tip 3: Use filters to block messages from your inbox
Let's say you have a relative who loves forwarding you jokes -- and a lot of them ...
And you're a little tired of receiving them.
You can filter all of his emails to a folder or to the trash,
before they even hit your inbox.
Tip 4: Don't be fooled by messages requesting your personal information
Some spam may try to trick you with what's called a phishing message.
The email may appear like it's from your bank, for example,
and ask you for your account information or password.
If you think you've received one of these suspicious messages...
... don't give out any information or click any links,
and be sure to report it.
Keep in mind, Gmail will never email you asking for personal information.
By using these few tips, you'll have more power over your inbox...
and be able to focus on the messages you want to receive.
