Cause and Effect. How many of you know all about Cause and Effect that you’ve worked with it before?
All right! Well, hopefully we’re gonna do it just a little bit differently today.
So the first thing I want to make sure that we all understand is that
Cause means that it’s the reason why
Cause is the reason why something happens and the effect is the What Happens
So let me give you a real quick example that you might be familiar with
This is the cause, and the effect is going to happen really fast so don’t blink! Ready?
That’s the effect
So, cause is the reason why. What did I do?
I let go. And what happened because I let go? It fell, exactly.
So, because I let go of the pen (is the cause) it fell to the floor
When we’re talking to someone about cause and effect, there’s a special way we want to say it
so that people understand that that’s what we’re talking about.
So you’re gonna see things like this:
Since and you’ll be filling in the blank with something
This is the reason why, this will be the cause and then there’s a comma, and then you fill
it in at the end with the effect. Just like we did before.
Since I covered my mouth, I can’t talk
You can also use the word Because Just like when you covered your eyes
Because I covered my eyes, I can’t see Exactly
Now, here’s the real fancy way to do it.If you want to go home and impress you mom and your dad and your older brothers and sisters,
you can say Due to the fact that, cause they all mean the same thing, this still just means because.
Due to the fact that I covered my ears I couldn’t hear Exactly
So you’re going to be seeing Since, and Because and Due to the fact that in these special little sentence strips
Now we’re going to be moving around the room but I want to make sure that you don’t push people and you need to take turns So
You’re going to go up to as many people as you can one at a time and read your strips to each other and see if you match.
See if that’s your cause and effect.
If it is, bring them up here and we’ll stickthem on the board OK
If it’s not, you’ll keep looking Are you ready?
Class: Yes! OK, go find your partner
[Students talking]
Look at all the causes and effects that we have. You did it, you found them all, that’s excellent
So, now that you’ve also seen some of the words that are going to be in the selection that you’re going to be reading
You understand that if there’s a cause there has to be an effect
If there’s a reason why, there has to be something that happens
So when you read the story now about the idepools and about the ocean and the teacher asks you questions
you’re going to be able to use the right kind of words to talk about Cause and Effect .
