Hi, I'm Jessica Klaus, and I'm a junior
political science major at Eastern.
This spring I competed in MIG, Model Illinois Government,
simulation in Springfield.
What we do is we pretend, in a sense, to pass laws or
different House bills or Senate bills that would
normally go through the government.
We actually hold committee meetings and debates and
actually have them argued on the House and Senate floors.
My role this year was I was in the House and
I was a representive.
My committee, the judiciary committee, I performed the role
of majority whip, which is the main debater/spokesman
for the committee.
My main role was to make sure that everyone in my committee
was having their voice heard and got the chance to speak
on the different bills that we argued.
The people that you are competing against are going
to be the top debaters and arguers from other schools.
There's just so many different schools competing and simulating
at the same time that it's allowing you to not only argue
against people that you see in the classroom everyday but
helping you to argue against people who are the best
debaters and arguers from other schools as well.
Everyone is at the top of their game and they're helping you
to learn and to think and to come up with arguments on
your own or to think outside of the box of the normal arguments
that you would bring to different situations.
To know these people down the line is only going to help you
in your career or to achieve your education goals because
they're trying to do the same thing, so maybe they can help
you, they can help you network, or meet people,
or just different things like that.
Through this experience, I've just been rewarded with so many
different things that are going to help me down the line to
hone my argument skills, to be the best that I can be.
It's allowed me to get networking and meet
different people and challenge myself in a way that's going to
help me to achieve all of the goals that I hope to
in my career, my education.
And it's just simply something that you cannot get
in the classroom.
