Hello, this is Kevin Caldwell. I'm a part of the 2011
Levine Scholars expedition to Alaska with the National
Outdoor Leadership School.
Behind me, we have over here a gigantic glacier,
if you can look to the far left, right about there,
you can somewhat see the ice actually receding into the valley.
It's pretty neat, and I tell you, the view is utterly magical here.
We are looking in the middle of a pass between
this peak to our right and this peak to our left.
And we just have this before us. The feeling is surreal.
There's just arctic tundra stretching everywhere
in all directions and we're in the middle of a pristine valley
and it just doesn't get better than this.
Over here we have Dr. Bob. What do you think
about the scenery, man?
>>It is marvelous.
Marvelous? Marvelous, you know, personally
I honestly feel that wet socks and wet boots are well worth
the view, don't ya think?
>>Indeed.
Yeah. So what do you guys think?
As you can see, this is a popular photo op.
Right there we have Callie Jameson from Hayesville.
We have Kelsey over here. She is our expedition leader for the day.
I'll just keep taking pictures.
And she will keep taking pictures. What do you think
of the expedition so far?
It's going pretty well. It hasn't been too hard yet.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for the rest of the next 4 miles.
Ok yeah, very cool. We do have 5 miles today,
but we're pretty lucky in the fact that we don't have a lot
of actual elevation to gain. The worst part about expeditions
in Alaska are the fact that you just keep climbing.
1,000 feet in terms of height climbed is just awful,
I can't tell you how miserable it is, especially when it's raining
and you're on a side of a hill that's this steep,
which believe me, has actually happened.
Over here, we found it kind of popular to do some modeling
up here in Alaska. Over here we have Kevin,
from Ft. Lauderdale. [whistling] He is sporting [yeah, baby!]
Floridian trends for the day.
I know this looks comfortable, but it's not. [Lauging]
Well I tell you, the skin-tight blue shirt does
look pretty comfortable, can you explain that to us?
Well, you see, uh, they ran out of black at the store
[grunts] and uh, they made me wear a girl's shirt.
But whatever, we're in Alaska. Nobody, you know, the bears
aren't judging, no one is. So, we're good.
Uh huh. And what do you think
about that hike so far today, Elizabeth?
It's been nice, and pretty and we see snow.
Yeah, we do see snow. And over here we have
our fabulous NOLS instructor, Miss Louisa.
Can you say a few words for the camera?
Happy to be here, thanks for having me.
We're glad to have you. And once again,
this is Kevin Caldwell with the Levine Scholars Class of 2015,
I will be signing off, I'll get this really cool view
in the background as a last, closing shot, and I will talk to you later.
