My name is Audra Putt. I am currently a fourth year student at Saginaw Valley. My major is
health science with a minor in sociology. I am a commuter who is from auburn Michigan.
Some of the school and community activities I have been involved with around campus and
in the community have consisted of SVSU Cancer Fellows, Relay for Life, Health Science Association,
along with also working as a CO-OP with the Dow Chemical Company and being a hospice volunteer
for McLaren Visiting Nurses and Hospice. I chose a health science degree so I could connect
my love for working with people and my passion for working with the public and others along
with the health field. Probably talking to the health science advisors was one of the
best decisions I’ve ever made when I came to Saginaw Valley. Not only are they willing
to get to know you as a person but they are willing to go the extra mile to answer all
of your questions and offer any help they can give you. What’s so great is that many
of the professors have jobs in the career field that I’m interested in. So they know
exactly what I’m going through when in comes to choosing grad schools and picking out classes
that I think will be the right fit for me. They don’t just see me as another name in
the grade book and they actually try to get to know me as a person and an individual.
They are always available to answer questions. They always give you individual attention,
which is very nice. With the smaller university I think it offers you more opportunities.
I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to complete my 120-hour internship at McLaren
Visiting Nurses and Hospice and also take classes that correlate with that if it wasn’t
for the set up of the program. Also with being involved with CO-OP and different activities
that go about what I’m learning in the classroom, I think the one on one attention is very important.
When I graduate I plan on going to graduate school. I hope to pursue my masters in public
health with a focus on health education and promotion and I would love to find a job in
which I’m working for a nonprofit, or hospital, or hospice in some capacity of a health educator
or health educator manager. So if your definitely interested in finding a career or career path
that’s perfect for you, I would encourage you to come talk to the health science department
and the various advisors. They are always willing to work with you and all of your questions
and there’s so many different directions and different paths that you can take with
this degree that’s worth checking out and understanding what all of your options are.
With the smaller university that means greater opportunities.
