Hi! Alex Read-Brain from Superior Beds coming at you for one of the last in my series of
video blogs from my road trip around Europe. I am currently in Namure, Belgium. I am heading
for Calaise tomorrow and the ferry back to London, and I’ve been staying in an Ibis
in the center of town here, opposite of fairground which was interesting last night, but I want
to talk to you about a bed that I am sleeping on. It’s actually really comfortable, um,
and it was a very big surprise given Ibis’s reputation as a budget hotel, so if we just
look at this, um, it’s, I’d say it’s a super king-size. It’s probably not, not,
it’s only a king, but it’s a very nice-sized bed, and I’d happily sleep on it for more
than one night. It’s 200 cm long, a 150, maybe 160 cm wide for the continental audience,
and it’s really comfortable, um, let’s have a look at it. It’s, I’ve got a feeling
that I haven’t had a look under here. I have got a feeling that it’s got some sort
of latex top on it, um, but let’s have a look. Ok, so here we go. You can see it has
this really nice topper which is foam by the feel of it, and let’s have a look at this.
Ahh, ok, it’s Sternflam, it’s a Belgian company, and this is latex I would say. Have
a look at that, and then what you have here is, no it’s not a sprung base, so you have
got a nice solid timber construction, nice springs in the base, but um, timber construction
added a list, and then you’ve got a decent but not overly thick latex mattress hard-wearing,
but warm, and then a topper. This makes it really comfortable for a night or two which
is what a hotel bed, or what hotel guests are looking for, but the problem with this
bed long-term would be the fact that I personally from latex experience feel hot, um, in a latex
bed, but have done the right thing by putting hopefully this is natural fibers, but it does
feel like a foam topper on there, so it does feel really comfortable, but long-term it’s
not a great solution and I wouldn't recommend a bed like this for your home given the fact
that it’s all foam and latex and no natural fibers. The height is good, all those sort
of things are very good, so I like that. It’s probably a good 60-70 cm off the ground which
is a great height for a bed, maybe 60 cm viewing it, and it means you are not getting down
too low to get into your bed. Anyway, it was comfortable for the night, but it doesn't
stack up against something like the pocket spring bed, long-term. This probably isn’t
a turnable solution either, and with no natural fibers would give you a warm feeling. So,
I am off to Amines n Northern France today to visit the Somme on the site of the famous,
very tragic side of World War I battles, so I am off there and another bed, so I will
report to you there before I get back to London. Sleep well.
