Here we have an orchard with orange and guava fruit trees in which
the children can roam about.
But on a farm that uses chemicals, you have to be really careful.
I worked on a conventional farm, a system that used a lot of chemicals.
They used herbicides, four times a year, fungicides, insecticides as well.
This farm produced a lot of coffee, a huge volume.
But, after about 12 years, all the plants died.
The people who work the fields were more prone to get sick.
That's why I began using a different production system.
This is one of the five highland varieties of coffee. The plants are very healthy,
with bright leaves.
These are worms…worms that eat organic material and convert it into
nutrients for the plants.
On a farm that uses herbicides, insecticides and fungicides,
you will never find these little bugs and critters in the field.
On conventional, non-organic coffee plantations, all you see
is coffee, coffee and coffee.
Not here. Here you'll find plantains, sugar cane...you'll find
oranges and all kinds of things that help with nutrients, that feed us,
are good for our health and the health of everyone around.
Monteverde Now -- voices from the frontlines of change is a collection of
personal stories and professional observations from those
who live and work in cloud forest.
It's about nature.
About people.
About climate and about change.
And while you may be thousands of miles from Monteverde...
it's about you.
Watch, think, respond.
Your voice matters.
