Hi! I'm Charles Connelly. I am a state certified fire-fighter on behalf of Expert Village,
this is basic fire safety. Being able to react fast is very important. So when you hear these
key words such as fire and a whistle blowing, we don't want to waste any time. The other
thing that we want to do is keep certain safety measures in mind. You might want to practice
with each other in getting out of bed as quickly as possible, yet staying low. There are several
methods; you could just roll out but you want to keep in mind other objects that you might
hit on the way down. So I would recommend to just slide out of bed and get as low as
possible as quick as possible. The reason we do this is because all the hot heat is
up top and down bottom is going to be cool temperature as possible. The other thing where
the oxygen and smoke is going to be up above you, the oxygen will be down below. The next
thing we want to do is quickly find something that we can orient our self with. The best
thing in the house would be a wall. So if we were to get down low and feel around and
make sure there is nothing in the way and find this wall, we now know somewhat as to
where we are at. From there, we are going to keep in mind that we practice this several
times. We should know that forward is my door and I want to move to that door as quickly
as possible. Don't forget to check it for heat once more because the fire could be on
the outside. Now say if we got there, the door is hot, we are still up against the wall,
I should remember that the windows are to my right and I might have other doors, other
means behind me. So this wall is pretty valuable in keeping your orientation. Keeping low will
always keep you from getting burnt as bad and the same standing up because all of the
hot heat is up above you.
