Student: Hello
Mercy Gonzalez: Hi. How are you? Can I help you with something?
Student: Yeah. I'm looking for the Adaptive Services in S Building.
Mercy: The Adaptive Services office is located in the S Building in Room 116
and it's just south of the Clock Tower.
Student: Okay. Thank you so much. Mercy: Have a nice day.
[banjo playing]
Lyn Mailoux: Thank you for coming in today. How are you?
Student: Good. I had a question.
This is my first semester here at school and
I feel that I might need some assistance from Adaptive Services.
What do I need to do to make sure I receive those accommodations?
Lyn: You will need documentation stating your disabilities diagnosis,
your disabilities effect upon your academic endeavors,
and your Doctor's recommendations for accommodations.
In addition, we will need your class schedule.
Student: So once I have all this, I'm all set?
Lyn: I would suggest to our students that you meet with
Angela Hartsell, she's our Director of Adaptive Services.
Student: So once I have all this paperwork, I'll talk to Mrs. Angela.
Lyn: That is correct.
Lyn: Hello, welcome back. How are you?
Student: Good. So, I got all the paperwork filled out
so now I'd like to meet with Mrs. Hartsell, you said?
Lyn: Yes, that is correct. Her office is right over there.
She will be with you in just a moment.
Angela Hartsell: Hi. I'm Angela Hartsell. I'm the Director of Adaptive Services.
I'm so glad you're here. Come on in.
Student: So I've got all the paperwork that my doctor had to fill out
and I filled out all the paperwork I needed. Where do we go from here?
Angela: The purpose of this meeting, today, is for me to get to know you.
We talk about how your disability affects you.
The more I know, the better I can serve you.
Student: Good, because I had a question.
My doctor said that I might need a note taker. Is that possible?
Angela: Okay. Depending on what the documentation says,
if it's documented that yes, this disability requires a note taker,
then yes, you and I can discuss what's deemed reasonable.
There may be other options. So we'll talk about those as well.
Student: Okay. And what if there isn't a note taker available?
Angela: If one is not available as a Student Assistant from our department,
I'll contact your professor and ask him for a volunteer in his class.
Student: But I don't want anyone to know about my disability.
Angela: Legally, the College and professors, we have to maintain that confidentiality.
If they volunteer, the professor would then meet with that volunteer,
actually get the notes from the volunteer, so that he can pass those notes to you.
The volunteer never knows who they're volunteering for.
Student: So, I'm all set now?
Angela: What I'll do now is actually review all the documentation
to make sure that everything's in order, to make sure we haven't missed anything.
I will determine what reasonable accommodations you're eligible for.
You should receive a "CC" a week or two before classes begin.
In that "CC" you'll know exactly which professors received your Letter of Accommodation
and what day it landed in their mailbox.
If you have any questions whatsoever, please give us a call.
Student: Alirght. Thank you Angela: Thank you, so glad you came!
Professor Tawil: I received an email about a student that wants to record my lectures
and I feel uncomfortable with that.
Angela: If I have the documentation and it is listed by that professional
outside of Edison, we have to accommodate that student. It is our legal obligation.
Professor Tawil: But I don't get that. What is the disability
that they need a note taker and to be able to record all of the lecture?
Angela: Legally, I cannot disclose the disability of the student.
It would violate the confidentiality agreement between that student and this College.
Professor Tawil: So can I offer this accommodation for other students in the class?
Angela: Not until you receive a Letter of Accommodation.
We have to have the disability documented in this office
before we're able to provide that accommodation.
Professor Tawil: Is there anything else I need to know about the student's accommodations?
Angela: When the student needs to take a test, we have asked
the student to come by the office to schedule the test
at least 72 hours in advance.
This also allows you the time to get that exam to me
either through email, or you can drop it off in my mailbox, Building H.
Professor Tawil: So does it mean I hand them the exam and send them to here with it?
Angela: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Always, always, always give it to us (Adaptive Services)
The student never, ever walks in with that exam.
They will never walk out with that completed exam either.
Professor Tawil: What if the test is online, through Canvas?
And if the test cuts out after 60 minutes, it's time limited,
how do I go ahead and actually extend the time?
Angela: The wonderful people at Edison Online can help you do that.
They can walk you through, step-by-step to extend that time.
