This is the National Weather Service in Elko here to bring you a weather brief for an upcoming
Pacific storm that will impact the area on Sunday.
The first Pacific storm that has brought widespread rain to the region will quickly pull out of
the area this evening. A second Pacific storm currently in the Gulf of Alaska will reach
Northern Nevada during the day on Sunday. Forecast confidence is increasing that a strong
Pacific cold front will impact Northern and Central Nevada during the day on Sunday. High
winds could be possible Sunday morning into the afternoon hours. In addition to the winds
another round of widespread beneficial rain will be likely. Due to the warm nature of
the storm snow levels will once again remain high above 7500ft.
This graphic depicts the high winds that are forecasted for Sunday. Southwest winds of
30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are possible across the valleys, with higher basins and
some mountain passes above 6000 feet could see gusts to 70 mph.
More beneficial rains will accompany the cold front on Sunday with the heaviest rainfall
north of US 50. Some areas across northern Nevada could see from a half inch to an inch
of rainfall on Sunday. Most valley locations will receive around one quarter of an inch.
A high wind watch has been issued for Central and Northern Nevada. Potential impacts with
this system will be dangerous cross winds, especially on east to west travel corridors.
In addition minor structural damage could be possible in wind prone areas. Snow could
be heavy at times above 8000ft for any outdoor enthusiast planning on traveling in the mountains
