Announcer: Saints fans, please turn your attention to the big screens
to honor today's Peoples Health Champion - Bruce Hirstius
Ben Hales: Bruce has what everybody dreams about
a job that he absolutely loves and makes people unbelievably happy.
On November 8, 2003 at the age of 75, musician Bruce Hirstius led a wedding
party second line from the St. Louis Cathedral and in the process launched a
new line of business for a Storyville Jazz Band.
Bruce saw an opportunity to merge the expressive emotion of a second line
with a public wedding procession.
Thus, a New Orleans business was born for the Storyville Jazz Band.
In addition to the Saints home games, Bruce and his band have expanded their
performances to the Mardi Gras season.
Bruce Hirstius: Doesn't every 81 year old man
dance around the dome playing music?
Ben Hales: When he performs, he puts on some moves that would get any of our
players fined if they pulled them off in our end zone.
Experience has also taught Bruce that timing is everything.
A lot of times, younger people are in a rush to get things done
and they miss the opportunity that might be there.
Bruce Hirstius: I am 81 years old and my wife asked me when am I going to quit
playing music in the dome and I told her when I get old,
but don't wait for it.
Ben Hales: Congratulations, Bruce, and thank you
for spicing up our games for the past 23 seasons.
