LCCC's Human Services students have initiated a Food Pantry at the college
to help their fellow students in need.
It's not just for people that are in financial desperate need. If you're hungry, we're going
to take care of you. We want to make sure that nobody goes hungry.
With help from the campus Service Learning Program, employees, and the community, Human
Services students have fully loaded the pantry's shelves.
This field is more with the natural born helpers. We're ready to serve, we're ready to get out
there and lend a helping hand.
A student-conducted survey from earlier this year of 105 LCCC students showed that about
74 percent are food insecure at least once a week.
I'm a nontraditional student. I'm on a fixed income through the military on a post 9-11
bill. I don't have that resource to go out and shop for groceries; I come to the food
pantry and I'll pick up dinner and take it home and make it for my family. I've done
that a number of times.
George also gives back and volunteers with the food pantry and is a Human Services student.
It's ok to ask for help. It's scary, but with our students that are in the program, they
make it easier to reach out that hand and say take it, it's there for you.
The food pantry offers more than just food. It has a variety of basic toiletry items,
laundry soap, school supplies and even diapers. All that is required to be eligible is an
LCCC student I.D. ... no questions asked.
They say thank you for the help and thank you for actually being here.
We can make a difference ... big time.
