You remember when DVD's first came out? We just had good movies.
Well, maybe some bad ones too.
Now, we have limited editions, collector's editions,
deluxe editions, Platinum Series
Ultimate Editions, extreme DVD's,
special additions. But I mean
what's so special about these? We've got a DVD
not much else. The difference comes,
when you look at the back. The special features
denote the addition of the DVD.
Wait. You're telling me I'm buying another copy
of the same movie, just to get production notes and cast listings?
I can get that from Wikipedia, FOR FREE!
But, they really have come a long way from these days now they give us directors
commentaries,
documentaries about how the movie was made, and deleted scenes we've never seen
before.
So realy, all these uber insane additions
are nothing more than a plot to get our money, and this can be seen no where
better
than Star Wars. These movies came out on VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc, THX remastered
editions, special editions;
this is where things start getting weird with Jabba in A New Hope, and Greddo
shoots first.
A DVD box set, a limited edition of the same box without the bonus disc,
that's real nice. Another seperate two disc limited edition release and then those
same DVDs were release in a box set.
Couldn't they have done that to begin with? Then they were released on Blu-ray with
all six movies or as separate trilogies.
And if that weren't enough, they're about to be released again is a Blu-ray
DVD boxset.
Whoa! That's a lot of Star Wars,
but they aren't the only guilty ones. I mean, what makes this worse than this,
or this? And this is kinda cool, but why do we need so many?
What makes this so much better than that? Limited edition can pertain to the
packaging that the disk actually comes in.
Like this still book, or this gas can,
and now we have anniversary editions. 20th anniversary,
50th anniversary, and this can bring us things we've never seen before.
Sometimes it's the same release we already have.
You know who you are. There are times
when a release comes along that's actually worthy of the title
collector's edition,
and that can be seen here with Watchmen. Now straight away from the packaging
you know there's something awesome inside.
It comes with the complete ultimate cut on Blu-ray,
special features, theatrical cut on DVD,
and the complete motion comic. Now this alone
makes it worthy of collector's edition but it also comes with the first
hardback
Watchman trade. So there are some releases that are good
and needed to be done. But my suggestion to the film companies,
is that you look to the video game developers pull all the editions off the
DVD's and Blu-rays,
and save them for something that actually deserves it. And what is that?
Sustance.
