The programme looks at Heritage and Management in all its contexts. So, it's looking at how
you manage archaeological or heritage sites, museums, a very, very broad range of sites.
It is the only course I know of that's actually tied to a world-class museum. It's actually
physically shared between Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and the University of Birmingham.
So you're working with museum professionals alongside world-leading academics.
The programme is for anyone who wants to become a heritage manager or who is in the profession
and wants to upskill. So, you've got the choice to come here full-time to do the degree or
if you're in the sector already you can upskill through the distance learning version.
We deliver it through a virtual learning platform which is Canvas. This is a very flexible environment,
very easy to use. There's just a single password in. We can upload videos, we can upload film
clips. All sorts of media and it's just really really flexible. Students really like it actually.
The course isn't totally delivered electronically. We also have an induction day and a study
week where we take you round sites just looking at how they're run, how they're operated.
This is after you've done your first year, so it's at the end of the first year, and
this allows you to see Heritage Management practice. It also allows you to meet your
fellow students. To talk with your lecturers. To have tutorials. Obviously we have online
tutorials too, but this is a really good way of adding a social dimension to the work.
They'll get to meet people from all over the world, virtually. We have people from Belize,
Namibia, Indonesia or whatever. So you're seeing a very broad range of sites and experiences
and that really benefits if you're studying you can see all sorts of different contexts
within which heritage is being operated.
Getting to meet all the people and going round all the sites that we take them to. It's great
fun seeing how different people are coping with heritage all round the world. It's a
terrific course.
