So far this season, I've made mistakes.
All we need is a little bit of sign.
Looks like we're gonna have to earn it the hard way.
I enjoy battling this out here.
Trying interact with mother nature and catch crab.
Yeah! Yeah! We don't settle for just okay.
Go home! We all [Bleep] hate you! Not a good sign! We lost power! Edgar, drop the anchors! in the port of Akutan Island.
The 125-foot Northwestern is shoving off.
Well, we're on our way out.
We're ready to start our second trip here.
So we got off-loaded, fuel, and we're gonna go.
We need to get out of here.
Turn around.
Captain Sig Hansen just off-loaded 141,000 pounds of red king crab.
Fairly okay trip, but it took 10 days.
We want one of those five-day trips.
It's gonna be our awesome trip.
This one'll go down in the books.
I promise you that.
I'm just happy to be here.
I want to haul the last string that I set, and then below it, that's where we put the Jake dog-leg string.
We've got Jake's string in there.
That's the one that stretched the farthest out, and I'm just curious to see if there's anything out that way.
I'm not gonna hold my breath.
But it's been a grind, you know, and the crab are harder and harder to get.
Oh We lost power! The 194-ton boat is on a collision course with the dock.
The crew scrambles in the dark to lower the 1,500-pound anchor.
In the engine room, Edgar struggles to switch power from the broken generator to the auxiliary.
Yeah! Okay, I got steering.
I got power.
Can someone go down and relay to me what just happened? Overheated.
I just switched over.
Edgar was pretty darn quick to get the other engine going.
The other guys are just like, "well, what do we do?" Edgar went and handled it.
Those guys were supposed to get ready on that anchor.
They didn't do it.
And Jake, especially.
If he wants to start running a boat someday, you can't just sit there and, "well, somebody else will take care of it.
" Nothing happened, and I was heading right for the dock.
Told you it's going down in the books.
This one's gonna be legendary.
You'll see.
of Dutch Harbor The Wizardfinishes yet another disappointing set.
Right now, I'm tired, frustrated.
I thought there was lots of crab, and there wasn't any.
Oh, boy.
I've hauled as many blanks in this season right now as I've hauled in the last 10 years combined.
That is not an exaggeration.
That is fact.
We got a storm coming tomorrow.
And the sooner we get this crab caught, the better.
Forecasts calling for 28-foot seas mean their brutally slow fishing could grind to a halt.
So, we push ourselves, and, unfortunately, I'm the guy that has to push everyone.
You know, my poor guys are just attered and beaten, and we're at the point now where we're getting numb.
Day [Bleep] 12.
I don't need to say anything else.
I don't know the last time I held king crab on here for close to two weeks, but it may have been never.
Red king crab typically survive no longer than 10 days in the tanks.
When crabs die, they release a toxin that kills healthy crabs nearby, a chain reaction that can eradicate the entire catch.
And I'm gonna be freaked out for the next two days until those crab come off the boat.
I feel like, you know, I'm like that two-leaf clover wandering around the Bering sea, and everywhere I go, I've got this black cloud hanging over my head.
With nothing coming over the rail, Keith is forced to move for the fourth time in three weeks.
We're gonna go set right over here about 4 miles.
I guess that's why it's called fishing.
Or is it called wishing? The last few days, man, they just haven't felt right at all.
I've got every good-luck talisman up here.
I've changed hats.
I've changed shirts.
I've changed underwear.
Just go ask the guys if they think there might be something they brought on board that they didn't bring last trip or last season.
The skipper sends his brother to hunt down the bad juju.
I'm probably just being silly, stupid, goofy, tired, I don't know, you know, but I just don't feel right.
No, nothing.
I don't know what's bad luck.
Everything I got in here has been here for 10 years or better.
I feel strange without some of this stuff.
After a 20-minute search, Lenny makes a discovery.
I think I know what's caused our little grief of pain here.
We have under the console.
Three weeks ago Andy Hillstrand from the Time Bandit was playing guitar at cape cheerful, a bar back in Dutch.
The night ended with an altercation between the crews of the Wizard and the Time Bandit.
The recall is foggy, but the neck of Andy's guitar somehow found its way to the wizard.
All right! All night! All night! Well, our last night in town, for some crazy reason, I decided to send my fist into Andy Hillstrand's guitar.
He was snapping you in the He tried to smash his guitar over my head, and I blocked it with my arm, and I'm lucky all I got was a big lump, but, needless to say, this is the remains of Andy's guitar.
That thing's got to go, man.
Oh, my God.
Get that thing out of here.
Out of our life, out of our hair.
Bon voyage, slime bucket! See ya! Feels better already.
All right, guys.
Let's get some crab, huh? - Let's do it! - Let's do it! No more juju, no more mojo, no more Let's just go catch crab.
If there was anything on the boat that was bad luck, it was certainly that guitar.
And it's now officially behind us.
of Dutch Harbor We're under the gun.
We've got a deadline.
Got four days to put on 40,000 pounds.
Seabrooke captain Scott Campbell Jr.
approaches his first blue crab pots of the season.
Worst-case scenario is we see no crab today, and then I've got to go looking for another day, and that would just I mean, there's no way we'd make that first delivery date.
First hook of blue crab here.
Yay! Wow.
Not very many.
Yeah, we got a couple.
I don't know if they're big enough.
First blue crab ever.
Not a blank.
There was life in it.
Yeah, it's gonna take a long [Bleep] time to fill these tanks.
Four crab a shot.
Looks like we're gonna have to earn it the hard way.
We can come into an area and grind on nothing and make a pretty big trip out of it where other guys would just pass it up.
Not what we want to do, but it's what we will do.
That's nothing these guys haven't done before, other than the horn, of course.
You don't know To make their off-load on numbers this low, the crew will now need to turn and burn through the gear Where's the bait? Where is the bait? Which means 29-year-old greenhorn Josh Fullmer needs to pick up the pace.
Where is the bait, damn it? This is the beginning of a very long day.
Just four days ago Point of breaking what? Mental breaking.
Mental breaking in two hours of fishing? because you can't get them through this emotional, physical point that we're out right now.
Yikes.
If he's failing on deck, it's costing us time, it's costing us money.
Shake it off, horn.
This hand right here is, uh Tried to get him all the preventative-maintenance stuff.
Get the braces on.
Get the ibuprofen in you.
He didn't listen.
He's paying for it now.
His hands are killing him.
Where endless hours in pain are a way of life What? I can't lift it up.
You can't lift that up? Do you want me to lie? Complaining is a mortal sin.
Oh! I don't want "I can't.
" I don't like "I can't.
" Never say "I can't.
" You're getting a little close to him.
You're standing there when you're throwing the buoy I know.
He already told me.
Yeah, I know.
And we told you that from day one.
I know, I know.
I'm [Bleep] up all over, but I'll get it, I swear.
I know you're gonna get it, 'cause I'm gonna make sure you get it.
Watch what I'm doing.
Watch where I stand.
You're not on top of him, and he's just gonna throw it.
He gets out of the way What do I do it when I got it unfolded and never, ever lift my feet? Don't lift your feet up.
So I just do this? No, don't do that.
That's probably not a good thing.
You just slide your feet.
Yeah, the Captain says, "slide," he says, "don't slide.
" Some people say do it their way.
Some people say do it the other [Bleep] Way.
As 9,000 gallons of sea water top the rail, Josh loses his balance once Twice And slides on the hull.
Oh.
Wait, wait, wait.
Get out of the way.
Get out of the way.
Okay, okay.
Josh made two potentially deadly moves on the same pot drop.
While tossing the buoys, e greenhorn failed to keep his feet planted and was nearly caught in the bight twice.
I don't think he really understands the dangers of what that line can do to him.
When something like that happens, don't [Bleep] with it.
Let it go, okay? Okay.
We told you that from day one.
Don't [Bleep] with it.
All right.
The horn's not mentally tough right now, so just a matter of getting him through this first trip, I think.
the northeast of Dutch Harbor Is the Northwestern.
We're on the Bering sea, and we're about to embark on our second journey.
All right.
We're gonna pick up my string.
Jake's dog leg.
The dog legger.
On their first trip Right here.
I wanted to cross these depths.
Sig let Jake step up and plot his own string.
What are you gonna do if it comes up blank? Now, after a 4-day town soak, the moment of truth has arrived.
Hope it hits.
I'll put 100 bucks down that Jake's string is a 30-0.
Yeah.
That's what I said.
All right.
We got the first pot coming up in our Jake dog-leg string.
This is his area.
Should have at least This is his area.
What I like about this is that it does have a steeper hill on the bottom of the ocean, which, I think, is better odds to get the crab, 'cause they've been laying on those edges.
They'll probably do all right.
If this doesn't go so well, I don't know how good he's gonna feel about me setting any more.
Praying to God right now.
Just let me get 'em.
Whoo-hoo! Okay, Jake.
Survey says The survey says Ah! Yeah! It's not blank.
It's not blank.
This one looks okay.
There's crab in it.
Could definitely be worse.
By the third pot, the verdict is in.
Seen bad pots before, and we're gonna see a whole day of them now.
Jake's string is a loser.
You look so intense, Jake.
You look so serious.
Smile.
He's all pissed off.
I think he knows he's on the spot now.
He's on the hot seat.
No.
Come on! This string is gonna be his legacy.
I don't know.
He's taking it so damn serious.
Hey, at least they're not blank.
"Man, I couldn't get any crab there," so I'm gonna be *** myself.
"I suck.
" The hell is that all about? If the string doesn't perform the way he wanted, then he's gonna take that to heart? Aah! After his dismal haul, Jake gets his next assignment.
Have any idea what we're gonna eat? We're not eating.
You're cooking.
Really? Yeah.
Someone's got to cook, 'cause obviously you're not.
You cook.
You're such a hero.
Why don't you find the crab, you I've been trying.
What are you talking about? Pancake and eggs every [Bleep] morning.
Takes you [Bleep] 25 pots.
That's all I'm saying.
Take it easy.
You're the one who Exactly.
Grow the [Bleep] up, and get over it, and just do your [Bleep] job.
After a long day of beating himself up Look at yourself in the [Bleep] mirror.
Jake's shows little patience for Edgar piling it on.
Don't talk to me ever again.
You go call your girlfriend, Jake.
She's the only one that feels sorry for you.
Yeah, you've had a hard life, daddy's boy! Daddy's boy! Dealing with [Bleep] punks like you, yeah! Silver spoon in your mouth! Settle down.
We all know why it was you! You! Go [Bleep] home! We all [Bleep] hate you! We all [Bleep] hate you! You go run a freighter! Fire me.
Fire me.
Get out of my face! I don't know what the hell's going on down there again.
Come on.
You! You! You.
He's got to learn to get a thicker skin.
Come on.
I thought it was gonna go to fisticuffs.
It looked really close.
Really close.
So, what's the deal? What happened? You know how it is.
Just No, I don't.
I don't know.
Yeah, but, dude, if you're gonna sit there and explode all the time if he's just picking on you, how you gonna run a boat someday if you can't handle a little nitpicking? I think I'd be a little different.
Why? 'Cause you think you have control so you can tell them to shut up and they will? They're not gonna shut up.
They would never shut up.
You turn on the loud-hailer, you'll hear 'em just going, "chap, chap, chap, chap, chap.
" Then what are you gonna do? Yeah! Go out and freak out, and everybody quit? I don't know.
Dude, that's just a small taste of what's to come if you're gonna be running a boat.
of Dutch Harbor I got about 40 pots left to get on here, off of here, and then we're heading to town.
The Wizard is racing a storm to fill their tanks.
I just hope there's crab in the rest of this gear, because we need a nice little high point.
Last night, Keith purged the ship's bad juju Bon voyage, slime bucket! By ditching the remains of Andy Hillstrand's guitar.
See ya! Now he's ready to haul his first pot.
There's more to it than just mere fate.
Mariners have been superstitious for 1,000 years, and it's not just because of coincidence.
Doing my best to try and get this gear on some kind of crab so we can start this next trip when we get back out on a high note instead of another low note.
Keith has been at sea for 13 days this trip.
Boom or bust, he must go in soon or risk mounting dead loss.
Come on, come on, come on, come on.
I'm still optimistic that we're gonna see some crab in this string.
Come on, crab.
Be in there.
All right, coming up.
Uh-oh.
Damn it! Looks like we got one crab! One! And he's looking for peas, and he only finds one.
I don't know what to do at this point, man.
It just keeps coming and coming and coming.
You think you get rid of the bad luck, you're thinking the curse is over, and you know what? You come back, you start hauling gear that's supposed to have crab, and it comes up with nothing.
I've got every good-luck talisman up here.
I've changed hats.
I've changed shirts.
I've changed underwear.
You neglected it.
You have to pull my hair.
Full pots.
Save my season.
Works every time.
Oh, my God.
That is like the hottest sign on the planet.
If that ain't a good sign, I don't know what is! Hey, whoa, whoa! Heads up! It's over! It's up! It's up! Oh, damn it.
Overhead! Overhead! The sea is rising.
It's not fit for man nor crabber out there.
Whoa! Whoa, whoa! The skipper refocuses on the safety of his deck.
These guys are pretty well wasted at this point.
They're coming from the starboard side The seas have grown.
It's getting right on the edge of not being workable right here.
This is right on the edge of not being workable.
Yeah, those poor crab are just taking a beating in the tank right now, too, damn it.
And they're definitely experiencing Mr.
Toad's wild ride in those crab tanks right now, flying all over the place.
Got it up? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
That one was pretty hefty.
No matter how much you try to control your situation Watch out! At the end of the day, you really don't have control.
Hey, now! Whoa! Watch out! Move! Move! Whoo-hoo! After an icy Bering sea shower Monte heads in for some dry gear.
She's finishing on a ***, I'll tell you what, man.
What the hell? A strange omen appears in the wizard's galley.
Hello? Hey, uh We got a giant sea gull that just went down the companionway.
So the bizarre and the strange refuse to end on the boat.
Kind of cool, actually.
Oh, hell.
Birds are good luck.
I mean, they say they're the souls of lost sailors.
Figure if that sailor came all the way into the galley He must have been on a mission.
Come on, baby.
Give me some number here.
Give me a number.
Give me a big number.
Yeah! Oh, baby.
Look at that! Yeah! Yeah! Oh, man.
Wow.
Look at that pot! Now, that's what I'm talking about! Everybody's smiling.
Everybody.
Whoo! Hell, yeah! Whoo! Look at those crab! Ugh! Look at all those gliders on there! Whoo! of Dutch Harbor Wah-wah-wah.
Is the Time Bandit.
Oh, this is a bad, bad, bad, bad thing.
Oh.
Not a good sign seeing all this gear going aboard.
For the fourth time this trip Captain Johnathan Hillstrand has loaded his deck with gear.
That was depressing.
And now he's back on the hunt.
Either I go towards the East and blaze these pots out and let them soak and hope, poke and a hope, and then run down and grab that gear down there and then shoot the moon with that.
Then I'll go South with that.
John must find a new place to fish the 900,000-square-mile Bering sea.
And when I come on back through, I'll come back up, grab our northeast stuff.
Yeah.
Too far ahead to think right now.
I see Johnathan's mind spinning like Fred Flintstones feet when he's friggin' driving his car.
Like, that's what Johnathan's wheels are doing right now in his head.
has left the 31-year veteran flailing.
So So what? So, what do we know? We know that We know that I checked the surveys again, and we just When we originally set our first set, well, that was right There was a big spot we didn't cover down there.
You thinking about going back South? Yeah.
Johnathan's new plan is highly unexpected But it was a big space right here we didn't check, dude.
I mean, that's huge.
Returning to the slime banks, the exact same place he struck out earlier this season.
Let's go down here and set a big set, start picking up we can start picking up 8, 9 hours.
Oh, boy.
Oh, boy.
We'll go back to the scene of the crime.
If you look at the survey, we need to get our on that bank.
We're already a week late, anyway.
So, what if we went down here and we zigzagged this whole hill down here? Pull as many as you [Bleep] need to.
Get it out of my system.
Let's find the crab.
I know exactly what to do.
the Seabrooke continues to work around the clock Whoa! To make their off-load in just four days.
Or what? I don't know! I mean, what the You need to fill them up like we normally do.
Go get the pot now.
It's too late.
The pot.
The I think he's just tired and lost right now.
That's what's going on.
The horn's not mentally tough right now, so gonna have to have another talk with him here to keep him motivated, to keep him out on deck, but I'm also getting to the point where I'm tired.
And I might blow up on him.
I don't know.
I'm so tired right now.
Been grinding for 26 hours straight.
It's hard to feel what's in my hand right now.
I mean, it's past the throbbing point, so now it's just kind of numb.
Hopefully this goes away soon.
At dawn The greenhorn's cramped hands Finally drive him off deck.
Oh [Bleep] Yeah.
Oh Oh.
Either you're gonna be able to push through the crabber hand, or you can't.
That's your choice.
Well, if you can't deal with it, then If you can't do your job, I've got to stop the whole operation and go a four-man deck, so Go out and work.
Or can't you? That's your choice.
Failure number Whatever number it is.
Oh, God.
I got to at least get another 20,000 pounds on now.
I mean, this is financially gonna cost us $80,000, because his hands hurt.
Well, it is what it is.
I'm done talking about it.
That's my girlfriend right there, Joelle.
This is Caddis.
He's the oldest.
That's my baby son.
I just want to have a good Christmas.
I want to surprise my girl 'Cause I'm gonna propose to her.
I've been after this for, like, a long time.
I miss her so much.
The coors light crab count.
Four weeks into the season, the Seabrooke holds a narrow lead, while the Time Bandit has yet to find the crab.
northeast of Dutch Harbor Don't even ask where we're at right now.
The Time Bandit arrives at the slime banks.
Despite a strikeout in the same area four weeks earlier I can't say the captain's doing wrong, but the captain's doing wrong.
Johnathan is convinced these grounds could still pay off.
Oh, God.
This is killing me.
If there's no crab here, I'll contemplate suicide.
The skipper's plan is to cast a wide net With a 45-pot, It's a huge risk.
The crew works from dawn Until midnight, with no break.
All I can say is, I hope this pays off.
With the last pot over the side, Johnathan circles back to the top of his gear.
Want to zigzag it all the way through, cover this whole area, so I'll know if we missed something, we'll find it now.
This is a scallop-bed area.
There's scallop beds scattered out over in here.
We don't know what we're gonna get till we pull 'em.
King crab feed on scallops.
A whole bunch of water and a bait setup.
That's what I think we're gonna find.
But if Johnathan misses the scallop bed by even a few feet, he'll catch nothing.
No guts, no glory, man.
Got to air your [Bleep] Out once in a while.
is by far the biggest gamble I've ever been a part of.
Yeah! Oh, yeah.
- That better? - Whoo! Yeah! Ha ha ha! We're finally gonna make a little money here, guys.
Pretty good.
Doing good, brother! Good fishing, baby.
This is pretty good fishing here.
Good numbers, good crab.
It's looking good for the Time Bandit.
Doing good, brother! Way better start, man.
We're slamming.
Help me to help you to help me.
To help me.
to the northeast is the Wizard.
With her tanks finally stuffed, the crew gets some much-needed rest.
There's boats up ahead.
They're not showing up on the radar yet, so Okay.
Their signal's not strong enough.
There's some up here, too.
I was trying to plot a little bit.
Deckhand Lynn Guitard takes wheel watch on the steam back to Dutch Harbor.
Yep.
Lynn switch is off the watch alarm the only defense to crewman falling asleep at the wheel.
