Route 66 - The Adventure
Scene opens with background music and showing two hands, holding a road map of route 66.
One the right side of the map is Chicago. On the left side of the map is Santa Monica.
A line connects the two cities. At the top of the map is a Route 66 road sign, which
zooms out of the map, fills the screen, and the words “The Adventure” appear on top.
The scene fades out to show a man and woman sitting in their car. Both appear happy as
they are about to begin their road trip.
The dash of the automobile appears and a gloved hand, searching for music, begins pushing
buttons on the radio. Once the music begins, downtown Chicago appears. At the top of the
screen are the Words “Chicago 2,448 Miles to Santa Monica.”
The scene changes to rural part of Missouri. On the right is a sign which reads “John’s
Modern Cabins”. Below the sign are three rustic cabins. As the car passes the cabins,
a tick appears briefly and walks across the windshield. At the top of the screen are the
words “Missouri 2,045 Miles to Santa Monica”. Scene fades to the two travelers in their
car, happily looking around at the scenery. A few bugs hit the windshield.
The scene changes to a rural part of Kansas. An arch style bridge approaches, as the words
“Kansas 1,850 Miles to Santa Monica.”
The scene changes to Oklahoma. As the car proceeds down the road, the round barn appears
on the right side. At the top of the screen are the Words “Oklahoma 1,675 Miles to Santa
Monica.” We get another view of the traveling couple in their car. This time, they are starting
to look a little tired and more bugs appear on their windshield.
The scene changes to Texas. The car approaches an old diner and gas station. On the left
are 2 Texas longhorns. At the top of the screen are the Words “Texas 1,500 Miles to Santa
Monica.” The scene changes back to the two travelers in their car. The car is getting
dirtier, and the windshield has quiet a few bugs on it. The two travelers are starting
to look more tired. The scene changes to New Mexico. At the top
of the screen are the Words “New Mexico 1,165 Miles to Santa Monica”. On the right
is an old style gas station. Two signs are outside the station. One sign advertises gas
for 20 cents, another offers free air. A road runner dashes in front of the car and trips
the gas station bell. As the car proceeds down the road a BLM sign appears on the left,
with the words “Exit 89 U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management.
EL MALPAIS National Monument Rio Puerco Field Office”. In the distance, 4 hot air balloons
The scene changes to the Arizona desert. At the top of the screen are the Words “Arizona,
515 Miles to Santa Monica.” On the right side of the road is a sign, with an image
of a skull in the middle, and the words, “Miles of desert ahead Last Chance, water bags, ice.”
A sign appears on the left side of the road, which reads “Meteor Crater, 6 Miles”,
and an arrow pointing to the left. Scene changes back to the two travelers in the car. The
car is covered with dirt and dead bugs. Hanging on the front is a desert water bag. The lady
is asleep, and the driver is unshaven and with blood shot eyes.
The scene changes to California. A classic green car passes on the left. Also on the
left is the famous "shoe tree," a tree with assorted shoes hanging from the branches.
As the car continues down the road, a new hybrid vehicle passes by. The occupants are
smiling and waving. A desert tortoise appears on the right, waves, and leaves. Roy’s Café
and Motel appears on the right. A BLM sign appears on the left, with the words “U.S.
Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management. “AMBOY CRATER National Natural
Landmark, Needles Field Office”. In the background is Amboy crater. A mirage appears,
glare hits the windshield, and the vehicle arrives in Santa Monica. A large sign for
the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor appears. The background shows the pier and the ocean.
