Valentine's Day is here. A day full of romance and love. Happy couples can be seen everywhere.
Well, unless, of course, you're single. Have you ever wondered why you haven't found love?
Researchers at the University of Iowa might have the answer, which may surprise you.
In this research, we look at online dating websites. We want to provide some type of
recommendation system for the dating website so that when you visit the website, you can
find recommended partners. We want to make sure these are the users you will like and
we also want to increase the chances that these recommended users will like you back.
That's right, there is an algorithm for love. Recommendations can be more effective based
on your past history rather than relying on looking at profiles.
The underlying concept is actually very similar to Netflix, but if you think about Netflix,
you have users on one side; you have movies on the other side. Users pick movie, but movies
don't pick user. To make this work in an online dating scenario, we have to make a lot of
tweaks.
And that might just be the recipe for love.
