Well, West Nile virus is an important thing for people to know about and it's
actually continuing to be fairly common so your viewers probably recognize that
this was an illness that first came to the United States over a decade ago but
it continues to be an important disease with several thousand cases per year
Nebraska actually is one of the hot spots for West Nile virus so Nebraska
the Dakotas, out in the Four Corners area a little bit down in Louisiana
those are the areas of the country where we see a lot of West Nile virus. About
80% of people who develop West Nile virus are totally asymptomatic so they
have actually no symptoms about 20% will get a sort of a flu-like illness they'll
have some fevers some aches and pains and about one out of every 150 people
have what we call neuro invasive West Nile virus this is where it becomes very
serious can be life-threatening, unfortunately there's no treatment for
it and there isn't a preventive vaccine so we just have to support people and
hope that they get better.
