I shuddered when I read this: “Failure is a word found only in the vocabulary of
fools and cowards.” The speaker was wrong. Failure is not the word of cowards
and fools. It’s the word of heroes and wise folks who keep dreaming though some dreams
fail. Who keep waging battles against injustice though some battles are lost? Who keep throwing
themselves into the cause of human freedom and fulfillment though many of these causes
fail?
I’m going to continue to support the Charter School movement, though there will be some
failures. These schools are bold efforts to make public education all it should be.
I’m going to continue to support private
schools like Cornerstone Prep because they have been established not to retain the status
quo, but to give children in poor neighborhoods access to excellent education.
I celebrate failure, not disparage it. It
is the sure sign of attempts at greatness.
This is my word of challenge. I’m Maxie Dunnam and I believe in Memphis.
