Korea had been having a quiet Winter Olympics in Sochi up until Tuesday night... with zero
medals to show from four days of action. Female speed skater Lee Sang-hwa changed all
that with a stunning performance which saw her win the gold medal in the 500-meter race
and smash the Olympic record. Shin Se-min reports. It was Lee Sang-hwa,
one of Korea's leading hopes in Sochi, that broke Korea's medal duck at this year's Olympics.
Skating in the women's 500-meter event, Lee clocked a combined 74-point-7-0 seconds with
her two races, setting a new Olympic record in the process.
She beat second-placed Russian Olga Fatkulina by 0-point-3-6 seconds.
Speaking to the media after the race, Lee said she's glad that she was able to overcome
the burden of competing for her second straight gold medal.
She also thanked her fans for their support and said she hopes they will also be there
to watch her compete in the 1,000-meter race.
Setting another Olympic record with her time of 37-point-2-8 seconds in her second race,...
Lee is now one of just three skaters to win the two consecutive gold medals in the women's
500-meter race,... along with Bonnie Blair of the
U.S. and Catriona Le May Doan of Canada. She is also the first Asian to win two straight
gold medals in the event. It's not over yet, either.
Lee will also go for gold in the 1,000-meters on Thursday evening, Korea time.
Lee started her career when she was a child,... changing to speed skating from short track
in the fourth grade. She later joined the national team at the
age of 15. Known for her strong will to win, Lee worked
hard both in school and on the ice. Shin Se-min, Arirang News.
