What we're going to talk about and discuss, is how to physically inspect a set of firefighter's
protective footwear, known as the boots, for damage. As we inspect the boots, they should
be taken directly out of the turnout pants or clothing, visually inspected by looking
them over, looking for signs of any type of puncture, or any type of cracking, that may
be present. Also, the toe area should be inspected, because the toe area receives a lot of abuse,
when we crawl as firefighters, doing our job, so the toe area, and the side areas, and the
bottoms should be checked, by flexing the boot as much as possible, and looking for
signs of cracking, or punctures, or dents. Also, if the boots do have some kind of puncture
damage to them, such as a nail when standing in a small amount of water. Water would leak
into the boot, and a firefighter would naturally feel that water come through the inside, telling
him that there has been damage. We should also inspect the heel area, to make sure it's
not worn down and intact, and also the tread area underneath the ball of the foot and the
toes, to make sure we still have good tread on the boots. If those are showing signs of
wear then, the footwear for the firefighter should be replaced.
