Welcome to this tutorial on the American
Indian experience database. I'm going to show you how to use
American Indian Experience how to search it, find documents, images, and maps
focusing on historical accounts and cultural information about indigenous
populations in North America.
This is the primary source database. From the library homepage,
go to online collections... choose databases by discipline..
and find history and anthropology. And the
American Indian experience is listed right here at the top.
You can search this database by
era, keyword or ideas. Let's try
eras. The hyperlinked text here
if you click on it will be taken to other materials related to the
topic
let's try one...Lets try Trail of Tears
here you're taken to an overview article of
this event. On the left hand side of the page
you can find other related articles, maps, images,
documents both court documents and cultural documents are available to you.
Up in the right hand side of the corner you can print
this document, email it to yourself or pickup a citation.
In this database down at the bottom
you can also pick up citations.
If you click on view all citation styles
you can find APA, Chicago and MLA.
Let's look at another way to find materials in this database.
Lets do a simple keyword search this time.
I'm going to use the Quick Search feature..
Let's search on the word Navajo...
click on search... the result page
will show you listing of articles, images, essays and documents
all related to your keyword.
In this case is 245 different documents.
I could further narrow my results here and search by using this feature over here
and searching just within those results. I can offer filter
by particular type of document articles,
cultural documents, government records
images, or eras.
Let's take a look at
idea exchange. Idea exchange is a nice way to find differing opinions
and views on the same issue. Issues
are in black here. Click on the arrow
and you'll find all the articles that are related to the topic...
they are hyperlinked... if you click on one
you'll be taken into the article. Again on the left hand side you can find
different essays and ideas
related to this issue.
And on the right hand side you can find
other articles also related to the issue.
