Professor John Hawley, Head of the Exercise Metabolism Research Group - RMIT University
The ARC grant that we've got at the moment is entitled, Optimising Exercise
and Nutrition Throughout the Lifestyle, and it's a partnership with our industry partners,
the Australian Institute of Sport and also Nestle International from Switzerland.
Louise Bourke, Head of Sport Nutrition - Australian Institute of Sport
Look, our study's going to break new ground because most of the work that's
been done has been very focused on either nutrition or exercise but never the two together.
Even when exercise is being used I think the people who have been doing it haven't
really understood the complexity of exercise. So this is a three year study and we've just
completed the first of the trials. This was done at the AIS so we've got all the blood,
sweat and tears, if you like, in the can and then we hand it over to the researchers.
And as in most of our studies we're always trying to take the benefits of the research
from the lab, if you like, out to the wider community where these can be applied.
And Sarcopenia is a major health problem and will cost Australian taxpayers a lot of money
in the future.
Probably the biggest impact that this study will have will be on the lives and both
the health costs and just the enjoyment factor and the whole social interaction with
families because we can keep people being well longer and, you know, functioning
independently and enjoying life for longer.
We've had this very synergistic relationship with both the AIS and Nestle for the
past five or six years and in the case of the AIS the past decade. So it's working for both
sets of partners. We're doing the research that we want to do, that's never been compromised.
We're answering the questions that they want answered for their respective
industries but we're also, again, giving back to that community aspect, which I think is very important.
