Hello everyone- I hope this finds you well.
I hope that this is a time where you can adjust to not only online learning,
but also the way SLIS runs it's version of online learning.
This is a great time to not only learn our tools, but to also meet other new students
who are sharing this journey with you.
By the way, that's a picture of me in Philadelphia from about 2 years ago.
How common is it to see someone completely engaged with their mobile devices these days.
The foundation of LIBR 203's success is always the peer mentors who take part in it.
They've gone through what you are going through now.
It is their knowledge, wisdom, and willingness
to show new students the SLIS way that ensures your success..
We have great people working with me this semester: Amy, Brighid, and Dustin.
Every generation has written off the death of librarians and libraries,
but our field has demonstrated that we've successfully adapted
to every technological change that has happened.
Once Barnes and Noble appeared, everyone thought libraries were dead.
Once Google came into the scene, libraries were considered goners for sure.
But librarians and libraries persist because we know that change is constant.
We adapt and continue to adapt.
This week I want to focus on D2L and the SLIS Website.
Add a Profile Picture in D2L.
I can understand how shy people can get about getting their photos taken or being hesitant
about posting photos on Facebook.
However, in an online learning environment, how can you not add a profile picture?
Remember: a lot of your classmates in LIBR 203 will be taking classes with you
for the next few years and, in all likelihood,
you will never meet most of these people face-to-face.
So why not add a profile picture?
Plus, instructors will remember your face well before your name.
So please take a moment and get that profile picture added to D2L.
Clickable Links A weakness in D2L is that when you add a link anywhere on the system,
it does not generate a clickable link.
Now that we are aware of this limitation, why not learn how to add clickable links?
It really makes for a better D2L experience
when people take the extra clicks to make their links clickable.
See the tutorial on creating links as well as the other Text Editor tutorials.
SLIS Website Two main things I wanted to introduce
to new students regarding the SLIS website Community Profiles Similar
to our Introductions forum in the LIBR 203 site,
check out the Community Profiles section of the SLIS website.
Learn what SLIS students, faculty and alumni are doing.
SLIS Career Pathways Some of you still aren't sure where this MLIS path will take you.
So, check out the Career Pathways page.
An information page for your consideration, these pathways are meticulously written based
on emerging trends in the field within the scope of the jobs available to LIS graduates today.
The new technology pathways are awesome and a lot more refined than when I was a student.
Anyways, until next time, take care.....
