DREW: Christine and Mathieu agree they need a new home.
Finding the perfect fit -- that may be a challenge.
My dream house is to have my own bedroom.
CHRISTINE: The layout's kind of awkward.
It's not quite right.
On budget.
This is a great area. What do you think?
I'm not going in there.
I do not want to renovate a house.
DREW: That's where we come in.
I show people properties with promise.
Over here is the dining area. After you.
CHRISTINE: It's more of the same.
More plastic --
Laminate floors and plastic countertops.
JONATHAN: And I take on the renovation.
CHRISTINE: I'm nervous about the roof.
I'm nervous that I'm not gonna get a kitchen
and all our budget is gonna be blown on the roof.
DREW: We know how to turn a dated dump into a dream home.
[ Sniffles ] It's just beautiful.
DREW: We are the Property Brothers.
We've got a challenge ahead of us.
Yeah, we're looking for a house
for a very active family of four.
Christine is raring to go.
Mathieu is, too,
but he's just concerned about the overall budget.
I think we should buckle up
'cause this could be a very bumpy ride.
And I'm Mathieu.
And we've got two little girls, Lily and Cami.
We're in a rental right now,
so we don't have a lot of space for stuff.
Living out of suitcases.
Half the stuff is in boxes.
We have to find a new place.
We have -- There's only a certain amount of time
we can be here.
Hey, girls. Let's go skiing. Come on.
We're a very active family.
We ski in the winter
and we like to, you know, bike in the summer,
and the girls are full of energy,
and they need to expend that outside.
CHRISTINE: We want to be close to the nature trails.
We'd like to be kind of have outdoors.
We need some more space, obviously.
We can't all be in one area.
CHRISTINE: It'd be really nice in our new house
if we could have some space.
I mean, this is the kids' bedroom, sharing a bed.
MATHIEU: They share a bed.
It's really hard for us to be here
'cause there's not a lot of room for us all.
We don't really like sharing 'cause one of us wants this
and then the other one likes that.
[ Laughs ]
I think we might just need a bit more room.
So, we need to find a beautiful house
that we can all have our own space in.
When we have this kind of conversation, I get excited,
and I get a little bit worried
'cause she can get carried away sometimes.
She dreams big.
So, I think we complement each other really well
because she's -- she's the dreamer and she's the vision.
I think he feels like I spend money even in my dreams.
You keep me tethered down to the ground,
and I kind of lift you a bit sometimes, right?
We complement each other.
Yeah.
But we are very different people.
What's our budget, Mathieu? You're the budget guy.
Budget is about $670,000, is what we can really come up with.
That's way past my comfort zone, but I think we can make it work.
We're asking for four bedrooms, at least two bathrooms.
We want a big kitchen.
We want modern appliances, great flooring.
[ Sighs ]
We want space, and we want privacy.
[ Laughs ]
My dream house is to have my own bedroom.
I do not want to renovate a house.
Here we go.
You can see the beautiful view.
CHRISTINE: It's a beautiful house.
I love how pretty it is.
It's lovely.
It's beautiful from the outside.
[ Gasps ] Oh, wow.
This is beautiful.
Look at the ceilings.
DREW: Lots of space.
Look at this space.
It's just so big and open.
This house has over 3,200 square feet.
It's on a huge lot. You have beautiful views.
Five bedrooms, four bathrooms.
I think first impressions,
it's quite striking when you walk in.
There's a lot of drama.
The dark floors, the white walls, all the beautiful trims.
I like the floors.
I don't think I would pick such a dark color,
but I like the contrast.
I like how it feels modern,
but it also has some traditional kind of elements to it
that make it -- it's a good blended kind of style.
You have this nice flow
right through to the front of the house,
and then through into the dining space.
Yeah, it's a beautiful dining room.
It's a really nice space.
MATHIEU: Oh, wow!
CHRISTINE: Wow, this is beautiful.
I love this kitchen.
Whoa. I love the oven.
Countertops are beautiful.
I've always disliked black cabinetry,
and I think it's very modern.
In here, it sings.
I think with all the big sky lights,
the chandelier, it's beautiful.
I know you're keeping the price for last,
but I'm getting a bit concerned here.
[ Laughs ]
This is really nice.
This house has everything you're asking for.
Why don't we head up to the second level, check that out?
All right.
This is quite a grand staircase.
This is -- Oh, look at that feature there with the couch.
DREW: Yeah, the seating area.
It's kind of nice to have that bonus space.
But the main thing in this house I wanted to show you
was the master suite.
I think you're gonna love it.
The pièce de résistance.
[ Gasps ] Wow!
This is beautiful.
It's huge!
I can see us coming in here,
locking the door, keeping everybody out.
Big windows, lots of light.
DREW: Turn around.
You can see a decent-sized master bathroom.
Oh, that is beautiful.
Oh, yeah.
This is so pretty.
DREW: It's offering everything that you want.
DREW: The list price on this house is $1,105,000.
So, that's a bit over our budget.
A little bit?
Drew dropped a bomb on us with that price.
Like, it's really an expensive house,
and it's really -- it's out of our budget.
I felt a little tricked.
Like, "Okay, we've seen this house."
It's gorgeous. We love it.
But clearly, it's not in our budget.
It's nowhere near our budget.
We find you that fixer-upper,
we will get you a home that looks just as beautiful as this.
It'll be even better
because Jonathan will do solid work,
and he'll customize it
to exactly what your looking for in a home.
And they need to keep this on budget.
They need to make it beautiful.
On budget.
They need to make it beautiful.
On budget.
JONATHAN: I knew it wasn't a good idea
springing the price on them like that
because they're just not buying it.
How many times have I done this before
and you still don't trust me?
It's not that I don't trust you,
I just think the follow-up from Christine is gonna be hard
because we have to build her trust back up now.
You have to crack a few eggs before you make breakfast.
What?
You have to cross the road before the chicken.
No, just whatever.
Go with me on this.
I have a plan.
So, this is a great area.
The house needs a little bit of work,
but it's got a private setting,
and behind all the trees, it's got a big yard.
Actually, over 8,000 square feet.
I'm not going in there.
You're not gonna go?
I'm not going in. It's hideous.
I don't want to live here. Look at it.
It's got a greenhouse on the front of it.
MATHIEU: With that attitude, we'll never get a house.
Do you want to live here?
I'm not going in. It's hideous.
That roof up there looks all strange and plastic on the roof.
I think we should go in and see what's inside.
Well, you can go in, but I'm not going in.
We'll find houses you both like.
Okay.
Thank you.
Here we go. We're up on the hill.
Great views with this property.
Wait till you see what they've done inside.
Okay.
After you.
All right.
Oh, Mathieu.
Carpet?
And what's that?
That's an '80s fireplace.
I think that needs to be changed.
That's really, really ugly.
MATHIEU: Mm-hmm.
Look at this, though.
I'm impressed with this. This is good.
It's bright. It's airy.
It's bright. It's boring.
It's pretty blah.
Well, at least I got Christine through the door on this one,
but she's gonna love this place.
It has three bedrooms, three bathrooms.
It's a three-story home with 2,400 square feet
and great curb appeal.
Now, they've done some updates to the house.
I just don't think they're up to Jonathan's standards.
So, was this renovated recently to sell?
Yes. Yeah. Exactly.
DREW: They renovated it to sell.
I think in this neighborhood,
what you're really paying for is the view.
Have a look outside of this beautiful balcony.
See the city? It's beautiful.
A lot of natural light. I like the trees.
Come through here to the dining area.
MATHIEU: Yep.
This is the dining corner?
This is the dining corner. What does that mean?
Well, 'cause it's not really a dining room.
It's a corner of a living room that you shove a table in.
Like, it's nice to have separate spaces,
not just, "We've made this living room into a dining area."
Maybe there's a way that we could re-jig all of this
if you decide you want to do an all-new kitchen.
As I just *** into the fridge as I walk into the room.
Sorry.
If you don't want someone to come in -- Block you guys out.
That's how we'll keep the kids out of the room?
DREW: Yeah, exactly.
Just put them in the fridge.
That is your separation right there.
This is just an underutilized space.
There's a lot of room and a lot of potential
for a gourmet chef's kitchen.
I think it's really ugly.
I think it looks cheap.
I think it looks like nothing's really been done to it.
So, we would want to put in a brand-new kitchen
because then it would have the kitchen that you want,
and while doing that,
we could adjust everything to be a better layout.
I think there is a lot of work left in this house,
even though they just renovated it.
DREW: Nothing wowing you so far?
Same kind of carpets.
Oh, I don't know about this, Mathieu.
Oh, Christine.
A little dated.
Dated? Oh, and we've got a guest already --
[ Laughter ]
It's small. We won't fit in there
on a Friday night with a bottle of wine.
Oh, no. You know, I mean, I'm not even going there.
[ Laughter ]
So, come on out here.
You can see we have two more rooms here,
great size, perfect for the kids.
Down here, this is the master suite.
Mathieu.
MATHIEU: Same, same, same, same.
It is.
It's got nice crown molding, right?
Again, the baseboards are done.
Over here, your master bathroom -- Have a look.
Okay.
Okay, so, interesting tile work happening in here.
This would have to be gutted,
but there's a lot of space to work with it.
MATHIEU: There's a lot to consider.
It'll depend largely on what number you give us next.
All right, the list price for this house.
This place is on the market for $580,000.
Oh, wow.
That's not too bad.
That's less than I was expecting, to be frank.
I'm just not sold on this one quite yet.
You know, I like it, but I just feel like
I want to explore what else is out there.
Here it is. Bigger lot.
I know that's what you wanted.
Well, the layout's kind of awkward.
It's not quite right.
I like the private courtyard.
This house actually has four bedrooms.
CHRISTINE: Okay, interesting.
Yeah, I thought it was okay,
but it'd be nice to have the option of rental suite.
That's right, and those bedrooms were tiny.
It's just -- There's no room in the budget
to make any improvements inside.
It's too close to the budget, yeah.
CHRISTINE: Oh, I'm done.
I don't want to look at any more houses.
I have more really good one I could show you guys.
You do?
[ Chuckles ]
That first one that you walked away on.
[ Laughs ] I want you to go inside.
It's time you change your mind on that one.
Okay.
The tiling is ugly, and all the trim needs doing.
It's just everything's not finished,
and, to be honest,
I don't know where to start with this place.
There's not even baseboards.
Like, they're all different and --
DREW: Whoa, whoa, whoa.
There is a baseboard.
What do you call this right here?
That's a piece of doweling.
Exactly.
Why did we come back?
I mean, we didn't want to see it in the first place,
so what brought us back?
Well, because when you see what's out there, you know,
it becomes clear we have to look for potential,
not just for a finished product.
All right, so, Christine didn't like the outside of the house,
and she's not a huge fan of the inside, either.
But this is a detached two-story home
with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms,
plus a one-bedroom income suite,
which may not appeal to Christine,
but it will definitely appeal to Mathieu's concerns about budget.
I do like the big ceilings.
A sense of openness, and, yeah, I think it's nice.
Do you like that, Mathieu?
Good sense of space. Yeah.
There's always potential for something that's ugly,
otherwise Drew would never get a date.
Exactly.
Over here is the dining area. After you.
CHRISTINE: Oh, it's separate. That's nice.
MATHIEU: That's cool. Yeah.
Well, it depends what you would want to do
with this space. I mean, naturally, for me,
I would want to open this wall up
and have the entire back end of the house open,
that way you're preparing meals.
You're also entertaining.
You're not locked in the kitchen.
You know, we've got busy kids, and we really want --
We didn't want an open concept at all.
MATTHIEU: We like the separation, I think.
So, separation from the kitchen and from the living area,
or would you leave this open?
I like the way this flows,
but I definitely like the family kitchen room here
with the separation,
and I think that's really what we wanted was separate spaces,
so we can all kind of get away from one another.
Now, the kitchen -- Come on through here.
This is a huge kitchen.
Thanks.
At least, the potential for a huge kitchen.
Yeah, but it's the same.
It's more of the same.
More plastic, laminate floors and plastic countertops
and old, dated appliances that don't even look like they work.
There's no way I could cook in here.
I mean, there's four of us in here and it's already full.
Can you imagine?
JONATHAN: We wouldn't expect you to cook in here
because you would have a brand-new kitchen.
And I know you're a numbers guy, right?
So, the thing is this is a great investment
because right now, this is the ugly house on the block.
JONATHAN: It could be the nicest house on the block.
Okay.
DREW: Now, over here, you can see a second living space,
which is always a nice thing to have.
Another fireplace.
JONATHAN: It's a shame
because they haven't dressed them up at all.
They've done such an ugly job with the tile work around it.
We could make that a ton better.
What I like over here is that you have a good-sized backyard.
The lot itself is over 8,000 square feet.
The trees in behind and on the side over here
give you privacy.
So, we've seen the whole main floor.
Why don't we head upstairs
and check out the bedrooms and bathrooms?
Sounds good.
Let's do it.
I know the kitchen doesn't work for the couple,
but it's kind of the best of both worlds
'cause you get extra storage and open concept.
I know, and who wouldn't want to see this beautiful face anyway?
Rude!
Hey.
MATHIEU: Okay.
These carpets are horrendous.
[ Laughter ]
Not my favorite, either.
I think you're gonna like the size of the master, okay?
What on earth is this?
[ Laughs ]
Mathieu, I want hardwood floors,
not valences with hardwood on.
Fireplace number three.
Why do we have so many fireplaces in the house?
Why three?
Like, that's totally unnecessary.
We wouldn't use a fireplace in our bedroom.
Could you take it out?
We could, but we got to take the stack
all the way out, as well. It's quite a bit of work.
MATHIEU: It's just not practical.
No, I agree.
I know we wouldn't use that.
It would just take room for nothing, I think.
Let's move our attention over to this bathroom.
It's a big space.
It's just very, very dated.
Cabinets match the kitchen.
CHRISTINE: Right! Like, the same wood trim.
and this looks like it's been in since the house was built.
MATHIEU: It's quite big.
I mean, It's -- To me, it's a plus for this space.
And another area that I really like for a master bedroom...
Look at this.
This is just added square footage for you guys.
Imagine coming out here,
having a lounging space to drink your coffee, read the paper.
All this natural light pouring in.
I don't know.
If someone can show me a vision, then maybe I'll come around,
but it's just very strange.
We've seen the entire house, and, honestly,
it's a great match if we look at your wish list.
Some things need to be fixed.
I understand that, but when Jonathan's through,
you would have this beautiful house in a great neighborhood,
close to hiking trails, skiing is close by.
So, what's the price?
This house is on the market for $570,000.
CHRISTINE: Okay, that's not too bad.
It's not bad. Not bad at all.
Keep in mind, I think I can get the price down a little bit.
They've been sitting on the market without selling.
Right, 'cause it's so ugly.
Exactly.
I think it's a contender, but I'm not totally sold.
I mean, it's got a greenhouse on the master bedroom.
I can't see it yet.
I need someone to show me the vision.
Right now, it's a bit much
to imagine this place as a beautiful space.
It's not today.
Mathieu, you're looking a little stressed.
Yes.
Big decision day today.
We have the house on the hill,
and then there's that walkaway house,
the one that you didn't even want to see the first time.
No, it's hideous, with that greenhouse on the front of it?
It's just not a place --
Why is that even on the list?
It seems like a sensible choice,
but I'm not emotionally attached to it yet.
Why don't we have a look at the house on the hill?
Because there's a lot Jonathan can do with this place.
Okay.
JONATHAN: I'm gonna start by gutting that kitchen
and using the whole space by removing the peninsula
for a more effective layout.
I'll put in all-new cabinetry,
and a massive island will be the focal point of the room,
perfect for your family.
CHRISTINE: That is beautiful.
Could you imagine us throwing a dinner party there?
God, it's so different.
You, of course, have to have your own space,
so look at this master bedroom.
It looked really dull and boring to you,
but with hardwood floors, classic wallpaper,
and contemporary furniture,
I'm gonna create a beautiful, calm room
where you can kick back and relax at the end of the day.
Beautiful.
Mathieu specifically requested a space that would calm you down.
[ Laughter ]
You want the master bathroom
to be just as impressive as the master bedroom.
Look at this.
The layout doesn't make good use of this big space,
so I'm gonna reconfigure the floor plan
to accommodate a double vanity, soaker tub with room for two,
and a shower stall.
Oh, check this out.
Look at that tub, Mathieu.
Really pretty.
So, that looks amazing,
but can you make that happen on budget, for real?
I think we can.
The list price on this house is $580,000.
Now, I do feel the market value is $590,000,
but this place isn't showing great.
I think if we come in really quickly
and get an offer in at $575,000, that will be our target price.
And then how much is it gonna cost
to renovate it and make it like that?
Your renovations are gonna cost around $95,000,
and it will take five weeks, but for that amount of work,
five weeks is pretty fast.
Yeah.
DREW: That would bring us in at your max budget of $670,000,
but that means within your set budget,
you'll be able to get what you just saw.
Like you said, the location is great, the view is awesome.
What you've just shown us is amazing.
Well, why don't we move along to the next property?
We have the walkaway house.
Christine, you are gonna be blown away by this.
JONATHAN: I'm gonna start downstairs
with all-new flooring throughout.
I'll totally redo the kitchen with high-end cabinetry
and appliances,
and French doors will bring in lots of light,
while a slate fireplace surround and a stylish sofa
give the room some class.
CHRISTINE: Oh, my goodness.
Oh, we're not walking away anymore.
Look at that kitchen. Wow.
I can't believe, from that old, 1970s kitchen/living room
that you can transform it into that.
And the nice opening to the backyard.
Mm-hmm.
I'm gonna give you a master retreat
that has that beautiful master bathroom,
but look at the transformation on this master bedroom.
You don't like that fireplace,
so I'm taking it out to give you more room.
This space has great bones and an amazing vaulted ceiling,
so I'm really gonna capitalize on that
with bright, contemporary decor.
It'll be the adults-only haven you wanted.
Look at how much bigger the space looks.
And what about the greenhouse on the front of the bedroom?
Are you gonna do something with that?
Completely redone.
It's gonna look fresh and new.
It's gonna feel like part of the master bedroom.
So, it's gonna be as nice as the bedroom.
With a little bit of cleaning up,
not a lot of budget,
Jonathan will make it look exactly the way you want.
This all looks amazing,
but how much is this gonna cost us?
This house is on the market for $570,000.
They're a little overpriced.
Market value is $560,000,
and that should be our target price.
Renovation is pretty substantial,
in fact, more than the other house,
so it's gonna take $110,000,
but it'll be the same five-week timeline.
CHRISTINE: Oh, wow. That's fast.
That would bring you in at our max budget of $670,000.
Okay, lots to think about here.
We'll step out.
We'll give you some time to think things through.
Pros and cons, look at it all.
When we come back, hopefully you've come up with a decision.
All right.
Okay.
The walkaway house -- It's got a big garden.
Good outside space.
And to be able to walk out from your kitchen/living room
right into the garden I think would be pretty cool.
But it's got a lot of work to do, and it's really hideous.
A lot of work.
But it's got a suite, as well.
But that's why you like it,
because it's got income potential.
No, just the big picture.
But the house on the hill,
that beautiful master bedroom with that bathroom is gorgeous.
Yeah, and the view is perfect up there.
Yeah, you can't change the view.
That would be fantastic.
Think about -- Don't think about how much it costs.
Think about which house you like the most.
Which house are our girls gonna love?
You actually look more nervous than when we first came in.
This is a big decision.
DREW: It is.
And do you think you feel comfortable
choosing one of the properties?
Yeah, I think we've made our decision.
And can you share that with us?
You're not gonna believe it.
[ Laughing ] I know.
It's the walkaway house.
Wow!
You, Christine, chose the walkaway house.
I know. I feel kind of foolish a little bit.
That is a 180 if I have ever seen it.
You know what? It's the potential of the house.
It's the room size.
It's the location, the lots.
There's also a suite in the property,
so we have that option of generating some income
with the place.
I think you've made a great decision.
Jonathan will do wonders with this house.
But I have to get the place first.
So I will start the paperwork.
DREW: You guys talk design, and we'll catch up soon.
All right.
Christine and Mathieu still have decided
to come in quite low with their offer -- $525,000.
The sellers didn't like that offer.
They rejected it.
They did counter back at full list price -- $560,000.
So, after talking a little more with Christine and Mathieu,
they decided to come up 20 grand,
so our new offer is $545,000.
I think we were a little cheeky on the first officer.
We went really low, but this one is for real.
This is our final offer. We're not gonna go up from this.
I don't want to pay any more for that house.
Not a penny more. This is it.
Well, they agreed.
You're welcome!
Come on! Get in here! Group hug!
Congratulations. This is gonna be a great house.
A lot of work for Jonathan,
but how does it feel to be a new homeowner?
I'm really excited. That's fantastic.
And you guys can celebrate, but I'll touch base very soon.
The renos are about to begin.
All right, see you later.
Thanks.
When we started this home search,
Christine saw nothing appealing about this property,
but that was then, and right now,
I have some pretty happy homeowners.
They've got a great deal on this house, paying well under list.
I know Mathieu is very happy
knowing they have solidified the funds for renovations
and have some added savings in the overall budget.
Christine is just happy that Jonathan
will get this place up to her standards in five weeks.
I know there's gonna be a lot of emotions today
because that's just how Christine rolls.
And to create their dream master suite
and an amazing open-concept kitchen and family room,
we're gonna have to gut this place.
Whoa!
JONATHAN: Yeah, all the way.
I'm excited to start the renovation,
but Christine and Mathieu -- They're eager, a little nervous.
I know Christine just wants to blast everything out of here
and start fresh, but Mathieu's afraid about the cost.
When you just buy a new place, you have the inspection,
but you can't see inside the walls,
so, you know, I mean, we're expecting surprises.
I just want good news.
Here. Ready? One, two, three.
Are you kidding me?
It just comes off -- the kitchen.
You just pull it off and it comes off.
It does seem like some of the craftsmanship in this house
is very shoddy.
The budget, the budget, the budget, the budget.
The budget.
Jonathan, are you sure we're gonna be able to do this?
Like, the floors we're pulling up and they're all glued.
Are you giving up on me already?
I'm not giving up.
I just have a little bit of doubt creeping in.
We've been, what, going for 15, 20 minutes, half an hour tops?
You can't give up yet.
Right. I'll keep going.
We're on task here.
Can I have a kiss?
Nothing more romantic than demolition.
Wait till they get their hands on the fireplace
in the master bedroom.
That'll get them fired up.
That's not the best thing that we want to see.
What?
You can see quite a bit of water
collecting on the plastic up there.
MATHIEU: Oh, my God.
Anxiety was creeping up, you know?
I was like, "Please, please let this be no bad news."
That means that we've got a leak somewhere up in the roof.
You did this, right?
Look at that.
Look at the back side of the drywall.
Oh, it's like running water.
Yeah.
Yeah, look at all that.
You can actually see that's full of water right now.
Oh, I don't like to see this, that's for sure.
No, I don't, either.
They did say that the roof was redone about three years ago.
There's a problem somewhere.
We're gonna have to get to the bottom of it.
The problem with that is it means more money.
I never keep track of money at all.
I don't think about it.
That's what Mathieu does.
Like, really, I spend it and I get in trouble occasionally.
MATHIEU: I'm concerned, for sure.
You're worried about the budget?
Yeah, someone's gonna have to pay for it,
and I think it's gonna be us.
Okay.
I'll have to check the roof to see where the leak is.
IN the meantime, we've got to keep this demo on track,
and I hope there's nothing unexpected in that bathroom.
Nice.
You ready?
It's not bad luck if it's in a Dumpster.
One, two, three.
[ Glass shattering ]
JONATHAN: All right. I say we call it a night.
Awesome.
I'm nervous about the roof.
I'm nervous that I'm not gonna get a kitchen
and all our budget is gonna be blown on the roof.
I just don't want any more bad news,
and I want to make sure that Jonathan's on it
and just making this happen for us.
And I don't want to be disappointed.
JONATHAN: Fortunately, the leak was caused by a faulty seal
around the old chimney,
and since we're patching that anyway,
we're back on track with the fireplace removal.
This is Christine and Mathieu's first look at the property
now that we have the ceilings opened up,
we're putting in the recessed lighting,
and it tends to be the phase of construction
that's a little shocking
because they're seeing their biggest asset torn apart.
Be prepared.
It looks a little worse than it actually is right now.
What have you done to my ceiling?
What happened?
This is what we want.
We want to open it up so that we can see what, you know,
is maybe lurking beneath the surface and we can correct it.
Are you gonna fix it?
Of course, we're putting new ceiling on here. Yes.
Don't worry about that.
But you can see we've got all the new recessed lights in here.
It's gonna look fantastic.
We're moving this over to build a peninsula along here,
so you can see we've got it wired for two pendant lights.
Well, I'm worried that the ceiling --
It's good that we've pulled things apart
and we can see the electrics,
and I feel like we're gonna have a good, safe home.
We're not gonna have a fire.
Now, this is where the biggest concern comes in.
I don't like that.
Well, it's not the best news.
it's gonna cost us a little bit extra money.
The electrician, when he opened up the panel
and looked at everything,
it is a bird's nest of wires right now.
It's actually a 200-amp service coming in,
but the only have a 100-amp panel,
so we need to upgrade the panel to a 200-amp panel.
And what does that mean?
It's gonna cost us probably $1,500.
Okay.
That's not what we want to hear, but it's for safety, right?
I mean, that's what we need to do.
I just don't want you to, every time we come here,
to tell us, "Oh, now the plumbing is not up to code,
"and we need to do that,
and the electrical is not good," you know?
I'm worried about the numbers adding up.
And, believe me, we've got the contingency,
so that's why the contingency is there,
in case we find something that we need to fix.
Okay. All right.
Let's take a peek upstairs.
Okay.
Bathroom -- a couple more issues.
Okay.
You can see the toilet's been leaking for years.
From the bottom.
So, that's all from the toilet.
How do we know we don't have mold
all through the house and through the walls?
Well, I can check it out right now.
Let's take a look.
Oh, that's nasty at the bottom, eh?
[ Gasps ]
See? You can see.
All this black and all this here mold?
Yep.
Now, fortunately, because it's not a big area,
we can remove it ourselves.
But you're confident the mold hasn't gone anywhere else.
It's just confined to here.
You can see it there. It's only a few inches.
I believe you, I'm just worried.
No. No need to be worried.
We're making sure that everything is done right.
Okay. Awesome.
Hopefully, now that we've kind of seen behind the walls
and behind the ceilings,
fingers crossed it's kind of the end of the bad news.
Everything is moving forward,
and I don't have any concerns right now but timeline --
really the only concern now is I have to find somewhere
to save that $1,500 for the electrical panel.
Come on, Mathieu.
Let's have some fun and do some shopping.
[ Laughs ] Where's Jonathan, anyways?
Well, if he's late,
we should just take advantage of it
and get something that we really want.
Something really expensive and beautiful.
Uh, expensive?
[ Gasps ] Mathieu, look at this.
Look at this.
It's like a whole wall.
That's really cool.
That is amazing. That's what I want.
Just feel how smooth it is, eh?
That is beautiful!
It just feels so solid.
You guys got here before me.
You'll have all the shopping done.
Done. We're gonna have these.
This is not something that we have in our budget.
When we're talking about money,
you need to talk to me and just ignore the side noise.
I'm right here!
In fact, you should stand over here,
and we'll just close that
so that we can continue having the conversation.
I can still hear you.
So, what should we look at then?
I think we want to go with something
that is more of a standard size.
They have a lot to choose from.
You can come join the conversation.
[ Laughs ]
They are gorgeous,
and if we had the money, great, but we don't.
So, what you're saying is I can't have these doors.
Not these ones but something almost as nice.
So, these are beautiful,
and I love the idea that you can see outside,
but I don't like the idea
of people coming in the back garden at night
and being able to see us in our front room.
You can add -- You can frost the glass,
or you can even put in something like this,
where we can have a venetian blind installed
inside the glass panel.
So, they pop out the glass, put this in.
It still has glass on the front and the back,
and the venetian is right inside.
So, you can repair --
If there's an issue with the blinds on the inside,
that's repairable.
You don't have to, you know, change the entire door.
Your door's still good, everything.
It's just -- It's a newer feature.
I love that.
It is sweet. It's very cool.
So, we could have the actual open space
or the feeling of openness when the doors are closed,
or we can just close the blinds.
Close it, and then you can also close these
and walk around naked.
Love it!
She does that all the time.
Shh!
Let's test right now and see.
[ Laughter ]
JONATHAN: With the door deal closed,
no time to waste on the installation.
Going with the doors that were in stock was a great savings,
and I also found extra savings with the cabinetry,
just enough to offset the cost of the panel upgrade.
And I've removed all the mold from the upstairs bathroom.
We're making pretty good progress,
but there's still a lot to do.
Hopefully, it's far enough along for Christine.
[ Gasps ]
...to see where we're at so far? What do you think?
CHRISTINE: Whoa!
How did everything happen so quickly?
It's amazing.
MATHIEU: It's great.
[ Laughter ]
Are you getting teary on me?
It's just beautiful that it's happened so quickly,
and I'm shocked.
I'm hoping I get even bigger tears once I show you --
Well this -- I mean, this is gonna be
the next biggest decision that we make.
I know things are happening
because we got Christine's first tears today.
I'm attached to the house now.
I feel like it's gonna be our home.
So, but this is what we have to look at.
These are the different ones.
We can go with something that's a little bit darker.
We can go with something in a medium tone.
I do like that one.
I was gonna say, that's the one I gravitate towards.
Same with me, actually.
I like the color. I like the tones in it.
This, to me, feels very kind of formal.
This is more, I think, in keeping with our taste.
It's a bit more rustic.
It's got a bit of interest to it.
So, that's definitely the one I like.
For once, it was a good surprise.
I mean, we decided based on how it looked.
Mm-hmm.
The quality that we saw
and it also was kind of the midpoint price,
so it was perfect, yeah.
See? I do have good taste, and I can --
She has expensive tastes.
So...
And then I wanted hopefully maybe
if we could have a sectional at this end
so we can sit and enjoy the fire.
Uh, is that a decision that we've set in stone?
'Cause I had ideas
for what we were gonna put in here for furniture,
and I was trying to keep it kind of minimalistic.
Apparently, she just set it in stone.
I didn't know about this.
Well, we want to have a space
where we can all come together
and all sit and watch TV in here,
and this is gonna be our family room,
so it's not gonna be minimal.
[ Laughs ]
So, Christine likes to lie down,
and she takes the entire couch.
Therefore, a sectional does make sense,
so the three of us, the three remaining people,
can kind of, you know, snug in on the rest of the couch.
It's such a hard life you have.
I'm not sure about that lock you've chosen, though, Jonathan.
I don't know if the curtains are gonna close. I don't know.
It's not very attractive.
Well, I'm spending so much money on things like, you know,
sectionals, that I don't have money for actual locks anymore.
Okay.
Do you want to see perhaps your master bedroom?
Let's go.
JONATHAN: This is the start of your new master bedroom.
It's...
It is everything that you guys have asked me for.
I wanted to make sure I delivered.
You're crying again.
I'm so excited. It's gonna be beautiful.
I can't believe this is gonna be our house.
[ Sniffles ]
It's gonna be your dream house, actually.
It is. I didn't think so when we --
Like, that first day we came and I wouldn't come in?
I really never thought --
I never thought that we could turn this
into something that we were gonna love.
Well, we are well on our way.
Look, you got me welling up.
I can't help it.
You can't have the contractor welling up.
[ Sniffles ]
MATHIEU: Don't cry again. [ Laughs ]
I'm just really excited, and it's gonna be beautiful.
I'm sorry.
Tears of joy, and we're only a week into the renovation.
That's got to be a good sign
that we're on the right track with the design.
I think everything's going well with the renovation,
but now the pressure is really on with the timeline.
MATHIEU: We had a rental, and the owners came back.
We've moved into my parents' house,
and all of our stuff is crammed in the garage.
[ Groans ]
We're living out of boxes.
All of our clothes are in boxes.
I've had enough!
I'm living out of boxes.
I'm on the edge. I've had enough.
I really feel like I'm hanging on.
And what about this box? It's not even sealed.
I have not have had a sneak peek at the house.
We haven't been there for two weeks.
I haven't been there in between.
I had a dream about the floors,
and it was all super thin, old pieces of oak
that had been glued together
like a veneer kind of parquet floor
with all the glue sticking out in between the boards.
[ Laughs ]
Obviously, in my emotional brain,
in my sleep, I'm starting to worry
about what's the end result gonna be.
We called Jonathan for a meeting today
'cause we're really worried about the solarium.
With so many issues in there, I don't know how
he's gonna make that a beautiful space.
And nothing's been done yet.
It's a bit worrying.
I'm not confident that we're gonna be able to achieve
what we really need in here.
Like, when are you gonna do this?
Because obviously, you haven't started.
And there's quite a bit of work to be done here.
There's more inspection stuff right now.
I mean, the bulk of the work right now
is happening inside 'cause it's most electrical.
We don't have those kind of problems out here.
Mm-hmm.
I wanted to convert this into a more elegant sitting space.
Okay.
Okay, so you're gonna tidy it up
and make it look like it's supposed to be here.
I'm trying to keep in mind the budget,
but I'm also trying to keep in mind
the grand picture of what this whole place
Right.
Is there anything else right now,
while you're interrogating me, that you want to point out?
I'd like it to look like a room
and not a greenhouse
that's been shoved onto the front of our master bedroom.
I'd love to take advantage of this space
and have a makeup area here.
And this thing looks like it should have plastic geraniums
hanging off it.
And what about all this? It's not finished.
They're not great doors at all.
These need to go.
What's this Plexiglas up on the top?
It makes everything so dingy.
And on this side of the room,
it would be great if we could have some kind of office space.
The whole place is just an absolute disaster.
This does not say "Bedroom" to me.
Could you do something like that for us?
Do you think we're all on the same page now, then?
Yeah, I think he knows what is expected of him now.
[ Laughs ]
JONATHAN: I don't know if I really like
the sound of that laugh, but I'll figure it out,
and I do know she's gonna love the new floors.
Are you excited, Mathieu?
I'm very excited.
I can't wait to see this.
Let's get in there and get in there, and let's hopefully...
The blinds are there.
Hello!
How are you?
Fancy seeing you here.
I thought I would catch you before you step inside.
Surprise visits are always nice,
but is there anything in particular
you're looking to see?
Uh, yes. Everything.
The kitchen, the bathroom, the floors, the bedroom.
I actually think the best thing would be
for you not to come in at all.
At all, at all? Ever again?
Well, once it's done, you can come in,
but I don't think there's any point
in you seeing inside right now.
I think there is.
I don't think that you need to.
There's so much going on in this site right now.
I've got my electricians working, my tiling guys,
cabinets, finishing touches going on everywhere,
and Christine and Mathieu decide to pop in for a visit.
The timing could not be worse.
Remember the very first time you walked up to this house?
You didn't want to see inside it then,
so why would you want to see inside it now?
'Cause I'm sure you've worked your magic in there.
There has been some magic worked, but, no, seriously,
I think you guys should probably head off.
I am gonna defend my territory here.
I am not gonna let you guys --
But if you have any questions,
you can ask me right now, but otherwise,
I think let's just have a little bit of surprise.
I have a question.
Can we go in and see it?
[ Laughs ]
How did I know you were gonna ask that?
I've been having dreams about the floors.
I've dreamt that you've put in tiny, little pieces of veneer
that had bits of glue sticking up in between.
I dreamt that I walked in the kitchen
and all the backsplash was beer tops.
So, basically, what you're saying
is you're dreaming about me now.
You know we spend a lot of time together
when you're dreaming about me.
No. Let's -- I'm kicking you out.
I'm kicking you out of your own house.
But, trust me, we are on schedule.
We are looking good, but stay outside.
As soon as he walks in, right, he's gonna shut the door,
and he'll be busy, busy, busy working,
and we'll just sneak in behind him.
I just wanted to say I'm gonna call security
[ Laughter ]
Okay, you know what?
Sounds good. Nice to see you.
Have a great day. Come with me.
We're going home. Bye.
JONATHAN: Yeah.
Yeah, they're not staying out.
I know they're gonna try and get in.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
[ Sighs ] Okay.
Around the back.
Look, look.
Look, look.
[ Laughs ]
I can't see anything!
I didn't even get a chance to see if the floors were in.
Why is he keeping us out?
Why is he not letting us see what he's doing in there?
I just hope he's not hiding something.
I don't think so.
Potentially, he is.
Maybe there's an issue and, you know,
he doesn't want to see our reaction to it,
and he thinks he can fix it in time.
I know what he's doing.
He's removing all those beer caps
from the backsplash
and taking all the bits of glue from that awful floor
that I dreamt about.
Where's a brush when you need it?
Yes.
I love the fact that I'm the one who's actually working here
and you're just primping your hair.
I finished early so that I could look good
for when they arrive, which they're coming now, so hurry up.
All right. Hey, your hair's sticking up.
Where?
It is not!
Are you excited?
I've been awake since 4:00 this morning.
I know.
[ Gasps ]
[ Sniffles ]
This is beautiful!
[ Gasps ] Wow!
Is this really our house?
JONATHAN: This is your house.
Take it in.
[ Sniffles ] It's just beautiful.
It's just -- I can't believe it.
Are we gonna live here?
I hope you're never gonna leave here.
Yeah, we're gonna stay here for awhile, I think.
Oh, you guys. It's beautiful.
It's absolutely breathtaking, and the hints of red
and the geometric pattern on the curtains.
I love the countertops. They're gorgeous.
JONATHAN: They really are.
There's a lot of character in here.
JONATHAN: And, I mean, top-of-the-line appliances.
It's functional, but it's beautiful.
CHRISTINE: I just love it.
You know what the inspiration for me was?
With the gray tones in the countertops
and the pops of red everywhere.
Gray with the pops of red.
[ Laughter ]
You hated this kitchen when you first saw it,
so I wanted the design to really reflect your expensive style.
It doesn't look anything like your nightmare, right?
No gluey laminate floors or scary bottle tops.
What do you think?
CHRISTINE: It's just beautiful.
Everything's just so pretty,
and there's interest all around the room.
There's lots of things to catch your eye.
Did you check out the black sink?
Yes.
I've never seen a black sink before.
I didn't know what to expect, but this is definitely --
It's just perfect.
Wow!
I can't believe this is the same space.
When we walked in here
and all the ceiling was taken down and everything.
JONATHAN: And then you just tore a strip off of me.
[ Laughter ]
Now, in here, what do you think of the flooring?
CHRISTINE: It's beautiful. I love, like, the tones.
It's got a lot of interest.
JONATHAN: You did not want to walk in this house,
and now I have a feeling that you're not gonna want
That's right.
Come on through here.
What do you think of this as your lounging area?
[ Gasps ]
Popcorn's ready.
I can lie here.
MATHIEU: Uh-huh.
And you can do your thing there.
JONATHAN: You really didn't think
this room was your thing, either, did you? But I did.
Refacing the fireplace and updating the French doors
made all the difference.
I wasn't convinced about the sectional,
but looking at you lying there,
I understand why you insisted on it.
DREW: It's great for you guys.
You can sit here, lounge, watch TV, or open the blinds.
You can keep an eye on the girls
while they're playing out back.
The French doors are great.
And the nice thing, too, they have the built-in blinds,
so we can close it if anyone's trying to sneak a peek
at the work that has been completed.
[ Laughs ] Who would do that?
They were running around, looking in every window,
trying to get in. I had to close it.
Check out your master suite.
[ Gasps ] Wow, wow!
Oh, wow!
I love it.
This feels so different.
And the orange --
it feels like a hotel room with personality.
A lot of personality.
CHRISTINE: Right? I love the wallpaper.
All the details, all the woodwork, everything here.
All the casings, the new doors.
Everything here was done.
I did not expect that at all.
Like, the new casings.
Casings and baseboards make a big difference.
I feel like they really finish off the space properly.
They really do.
It just feels so grownup, you know?
It feels like we're really starting
the next chapter in our life.
It's -- This is it.
I'm so glad you like it.
Removing that fireplace worked out really well
because now you have a lot more space in your master retreat.
You can really relax and unwind.
It's a beautiful space.
When we first walked in here,
I never would have imagined
that you could have transformed it into this.
Like, it's really beautiful.
But what this master bedroom was missing before
was a beautiful master bath.
[ Gasps ]
Oh, my goodness. That's beautiful.
Oh, wow. And look at the floor!
Look at the beautiful mat!
MATHIEU: Let's look at the shower.
[ Laughs ]
I love it.
It's so, so, so pretty.
DREW: Well, now you have this beautiful bathroom,
you have this massive master bedroom,
but the square footage doesn't end there.
Go on out here.
CHRISTINE: Oh, my goodness.
It's totally transformed.
[ Gasps ] Look at that!
Oh, look!
It's absolutely beautiful.
It's absolutely beautiful.
Like, it's just completely transformed.
You said you wanted to have a makeup stand.
You said you wanted to have some office space.
I said I'd like something to lounge.
Well, we gave you everything.
It's beautiful. I'm blown away.
I think you guys have nailed it.
It's just warm and elegant, and it's absolutely beautiful.
Give me a hug.
I think this is where Jonathan and I
have to say congratulations.
Thank you both so much.
We'll let you guys enjoy your new space.
Congratulations once again.
Thank you so much, guys.
[ Laughs ]
This house may have been an eyesore to Christine
when she first saw it, but today,
the tears in her eyes proved that this long journey
was well worth it.
They got a great savings on the purchase price,
which gave Mathieu peace of mind
before Jonathan started the renovations.
And when the work began, Christine's expectations soared.
But Jonathan managed the budget and balanced the requests
and concerns from both Christine and Mathieu,
giving them the perfect family home,
as promised.
This is my favorite house ever!
[ Laughs ]
Yes!
You know what's gonna happen?
Mummy's gonna take all of that,
and she's gonna lie down and sleep.
