I reporter Jason cash-rich sit down with music professor Peter Knapp
at the tunes that into what upcoming incurring in the program
hi my name is Jason estrogen this is I E News
and I'm here to interview doctor nap who is a music professor here at Long Beach
City College
how you doing today mister now I'm great day well
which courses are you teaching this semester in the music department this
message I have found some unusual music theory course is musicianship
and beginning in advance and them I also doing some GE courses
history Iraq for the first time and I music appreciation
and I helped coordinate the applied program which is see a course for music
majors
hi spent essay which courses are your favorite ones to teach
I'm I enjoy I'm all for different reasons and
music major courses a car so really
more focus on specifically what I train and
them it to do a lot more specific work with the students
on his Sina progress over time so that's how is really enjoyable as
on-scene students over a two to three-year period as opposed to just one
semester
for the generalized tunes okay do you having to play any instruments
idea of primarily piano and percussion awesome
ever talk music lessons I yeah actually back in our college edit some private
lessons and things but since grad school I mostly done now I'm
all coursework and research thanks have you written any books on music at
I had no now have in town I and my dissertation is
something I've been toying with turning into a book project but not yet now you
said your dissertation
thats you have a PhD from Ohio State University K
yeah with your dissertation on perfect pitch
I know that was my master's degree that the station was on something else and
what historical okay well about the perfect pitch that was a
a fascinating there can you explain to me what your thoughts or feelings about
absolute are perfect pitch I'm glad they're kinda the same thing
and people in music release a absolute pitch because nobody's perfect I'm
there its radio better yeah practice as me almost perfect to have
it's very idea that somebody has ability to hear pitching know what it is without
referring to something else an instrument or something like that
I'm or they can saying im pretty sketches again without needing attention
to tell them
reso on base in a research note that kind of testing those abilities and
finding really a range have abilities and confirming that
what other researchers had found as well that even many concerts
and yeah I write a different things but here at college I'm off campus and
things like that so
try to get around you know not doing committee worker teaching hate hear
things like that but yeah
from what is your favorite music for Sunday favorite bands I'll
guy that's that special I get a lot that's a tough question I have yet
i'd I really have a variety of things and that's not
Brainiac cop-out on I think it's actually best to have
a lot of different favorites and really not narrow things down too much
on and a lot of it depends on what I'm doing what the purpose the music is
if I'm driving a car and it's one type music because it's
is your hero I'm a certain mood on North news programs NPR
it on at the gym I was in other types of music and if I'm studying or working on
something specific another type music
and it really is kinda background and soundtrack
you know for different things going on and
so yeah just a real wide right Amin I was in a different
pop stations and classical of course and
just right and 1 rating also it my sense is that
they'll give me CDs things there were seen to
when I get into this music I've never heard before and that's really been
great urban ears to
that's fantastic yeah but what is your vision for the program here at LBCC in
the music department
and we have found a number of things going on
and and we're actually the process of hiring two new full-time instructors and
jazz instructor
and and a keyboard instructor piano
keyboard I'm studies and we're working on the next big project right now is to
introduce the
on on associate during transfer music we
currently already have a course in associates in music that is transferable
on but with the new state law which is trying to release streamline things
from Community College into the CSU system we should have that degree online
this coming fall
and which is going to help students really know specifically take these
courses and your
guaranteed admission to SCSU not necessarily a specific campus
and and as far as music goes just have to audition
but it will help students really lock and I'm getting into a CSU program
I'm so that'll be coming online in the fall in with that we're gonna be
reintroducing the jazz program
with the hiring at this new full-time person as awesome you happen so if
there's any openings right now if a student where to you want to register
late for a music class
as a ban on the course and I think there are still some GE courses that are open
and a lot in a music major courses have prerequisites so it depends on which one
your trainee
to get into are and as a number prerequisites so
I'm gonna lie I G courses I think so have some openings
and I know my music forty-one does on so yeah they're so some did the
cuts that affected the college last year did they affect the music program very
much uRS is still pretty intact
now they didn't really affect us there as a lot of people now
I'm very sadly the commercial music program and
was pretty much ended especially in the production side
and that entire program was cut
and the promise I wasn't exactly cut that with retirements
and other course limitations we had to
really take a lot of the jazz program and moved over into the academic music
side of the house
and that's why we're gonna rebooting and that way but
I'm sadly the on the production side was completely eliminated at least
for the foreseeable future I'm sorry to hear that if there's a
better resolution same working on it
what is the last concert you attended
I'll ask on site and it would have been in the up back in December
and with that we have a series of concerts on in that apartment
sell various holiday season type concerts
clip have you heard the symphonic band play it I'm not this master not yet but
yeah I have heard several times
and I haven't heard what they're doing this master spend as they were
sure they'll say you like to the public or the you need to know about the
program about yourself I'm well just we're really looking to start expanding
things
I'm I next semester and we are going to be hosting a music
day is a new I'm idea we're gonna be doing on
made tempers are tentative date so we'll get that from doubt that we have
pencil that date and and what we're going to do that is
I'm especially right high school students or even
you know current LBCC stands for anyone interested in joining the program is a
music major
provide information provided addition times and
and actually help really hope we have some guests here as well for some
performances
any different vendors to guess since you know information about the field in
general so excited about introducing that
okay well one more question yeah
if a student wanted to take justices learning classes in the music department
with a be able to take everything they needed for
the degree and to prepare or would you recommend that they come here to get
their hands on experience
that's a great question fact I was just happy I'm on the distance learning
task force committee and we were discussing this very issue that the
college
and would like to look at making it official that someone could
for certain degrees actually complete the entire city courses online
on that's something we're looking at down the road but the music program
and Virginia that's not the case right now the the majority of classes are all
here on campus
and well I change the future we'll have to see I mean how to sing music is very
much a
a personal one-on-one there's a lot of interaction skill sets
that it's really hard to do that at a distance
yeah I even with all the technology we had so apparently that's not the case
okay well thank you very much I appreciated your welcome thank you
fund-raising gas church in this has been a I news
and I want to thank doctor nap for coming today and
you have a great day and I hope you come and watch us again

sir arm I have been a professional bass player for over 40 years

other than real estate that I've been doing last 13 years
um and having kids at home and seeing how they react to music in my experience
is playing at Disneyland
in Giggs pass our stake I would love to do something
to share my experience in the music business I
over all these years with kids okay and then also you
worked with SBDC an offense to help with your business how has that helps heal
I am with the start of it yeah I was really surprised after 13 years working
real estate in the city that I did not know about the SBDC resource
I actually asked a hard money lender in real estate hey I need a small business
loan
can start none I'm gonna start this business and he referred me to on
I might Daniel over SPDC has been I'm
just paramount and in helping me giving me confidence
that what I'm doing is feasible that its a
it's a good business plan he helped put it all the financial projections on
Excel

and we're here at pad now with Bobby Ferguson who is the access and
Facilities Coordinator
how are you doing I'm great thank you so much for inviting me today
great now can you tell us a little bit more about batman & when it was
established
absolutely Padma is the new Long Beach public access TV station
I'm and it was established by the Long Beach me actually partnership which is
our parent organization
and they're responsible for doing lots a great things in the community
utility assistance tax assistance youth programs
and public access is just another I'm when those programs that were bringing
to the community
had actually went live on our channel on August 31st 2012
and so that's when we access our broadcast or signal
I'm so that was really exciting for us we actually had a couple
on different programs form our members who came in and
May 2nd a the slashers when we open our brand new HD studio
and we had our first live event that's also when we launched our
on pending .tv website so on and then
we've had we have about almost 200 members pair the reason why we start
public access back in Long Beach was there used to be a public access TV
station
and about that in person with dark about four years ago
and with Los Angeles being so close to us sometimes Long Beach just get kind of
forgotten in the mix in so this is a chance for Long Beach residents to come
down here
take a certification classes become a member and they can use our resources to
share their
perspective on their city in a positive way
we get a lot and I'm social justice programming we get a lot and
need at musical performances cell
their our program is pretty fantastic so gray and so where can we find you

thanks jet then reporter Jake %uh prospero had the privilege to sit down
with Derek shot
and Liz way radio personality is for Albi theses
on KCET why at them
and the recipients ever prestigious award from radio flag dot com
radio star award hello
I'm Jacob ross perot I'm here with the cohost up bases on radio
here long piece in college KCT why radio station
I'm here with their shots and Liz way the just for
receive the prestigious walk from radio flag and I'm gonna let them elaborate
on what the circumstances were they got it and work hard to promote it
and where they come from Tim be that way they are now some
my first question do you dare thank you might affect thank you for being on
showtime is way too
thanks for having us arm as fantastic BRB years specially after
this prestigious award could you up please elaborate
on the radio station first before going to work buck a citywide I started out as
a
muscle station probably long before we were
old enough to even go to college other hand out when I first walked in the door
but five semesters back
at as can just doing its thing you know but a few good ideas later and a couple
really energetic people
and we get to a point where we're winning an award from you know
big-time gonna you know part internet radios concern I
its new job his way on this question you
what brown %um pick a citywide first place well addicted
you to radio well I'd always been a performer like I've been an
improvisational comedy theater
I saying I you know i i wasnt speech and debate
for like a long time I just I a performer yes I came into the sick
the building I was like a word or the TV class right yet at this time unlike
I have map that sucks I but you can be in radio units round shell and then my
like
you know performing narcissism was totally paid by that make my own show
so I would come the class that evening and they were like hey
Ikey host in China bed you know you've been here for like 30 minutes I was like
yes and that I got hooked and now I absolutely love it miss my forcing us to
the class
so dear burglars in one you chime in on this
runner some fundamentals in that goes into radio says you're there
not the only ones there are is there other people involved in class
but now there's there's a lot going on in that class on a given
toma de a it's a it's a classroom there
runs like a radio station aka so you have people
many people do shows but you offer people making commercials
a writing and recording new segments you have people running the station
managing the music it it's a radio station in two runs as such even know
its own collegiate in my room well there's a ton of different people in the
station
because you know this is a community college in so we're really at QlikTech
we're not we're pretty fragmented in terms of like
your identity people so there's different ages different backgrounds
different
and everything but you know everybody was an American have her own show so
every show was content is different
so you know if they're contributing content and they're contributing to you
know the overall into the station
and the your classroom setting up contributing ideas and
you know if if they can't put something for work doesn't matter if it's
you know did not conform to any like kinda idea
that you know whatever it's just them and they can do that and then their part
the station and its really
I like I don't think there's any other stations like it
now the name your show in space is afraid yep
could you please elaborate on some things the ground om
into your shown BRB doing pre-production post-production
anything like that are huge pretty much does off-the-cuff
it the he does all the hard work okay
did this the radio that started in my first semester here at that would be a
cool
name just have been just the a lot about music you know about music that most
people don't know we're here
and as this message was one on it just grew and grew and grew
when was dumped on board we just can't really take it to the next level
we would put a lot of production and do it a what a background music while the
sounds like the games we play on the show and we really do it all
a it's it's definitely a variety show we got music we got
funny stuff in it a man we we do it all in the
the the sky's the limit this master to actually get right up our selves to
my one is some good news is that I'll play on your show oh my gosh we played
on
when one share that was decade by decade so we played a song from 1912
I what finals before 1900 but it was really whacked out in terms i click link
Rachna so we kinda like China white matter
years and years have likened will you be worth to a baby and the baby's doctor
was like
it was weird yeah but I am every play like something like the you gain
original soundtracks for how I was like a win the plate because I'm
kinda in the match honor as well and you play down I think a replay show tunes
and I now and there's nothing not a single John that we have yet to touch
haha remember when we dub step in our friendship
we find them said okay I really played every genre imaginable
even poke yes we happily polka with no telling thing
yeah enabling as fantastic as on fun
home come so you're going to continue this show the semester oh yeah
absolutely
absolutely so okay I have to get to me but it is this not
house built to win this war
I had it feels pretty good we we were surprised when we got nominated
and we just can't keep doing what we're doing
you can think about it too much and when we found out that we won
a personal award for the show we thought that was pretty cool but the
even collar thing was we looked online and sonic ACT why I had one station at
the year last time past
so year I mean we just we just gotta say that everybody who helped
make that happen all the other post about the other shows you know it's
it's something to be said when when everyone was together that way and just
kinda does what they do no rules no
no restrictions and you bring for the material that people enjoy so much as
donahue with the whole your word for it up
his way um one want to save that
added to your success on radio well on what
when I came in mainly there are going up you know public relations person like
someone to promote
and I was like how do you do that like how you like to I put fires out do I do
that
tweet things like I wasn't really first in social media but no I I learned it
and then
you off the radio flag it's kinda like Twitter but your audience is already
built and like
everybody on what it's like a I wanna listen to radio and I was like sweet
sides I push that willy nilly
really hard and everybody else contributed you know
they they weren't into an HR doing as well and its
group effort is the reason why we were able to get in on walls and why the
audience is so
perceptive us i mean worldwide like everywhere
and your own I mean you know why don't you have like a gigantic audience per se
but we are audiences literally
everywhere around the globe so it's really cool and it's because everybody
kind young group together and was able to like put the word out through the
Internet or through
you know good contents lot so on
you money time in on this PCT one
yet is there a radio station on could you please tell us a little bit more
about that back a city wiser
well right now it's a it's a growing station and
we is better let me see how that you're right right in the building behind us
and we only use its at BBG billion and
we've done a lot I'll is work extremely hard
to get our name out there and everyone's kinda done
a great the love work a to to keep us where we are in to push us to the next
level we're gonna continue to
to grow as a station are gonna continue to get our name out there
and in fact just last semester we did something with the BA
that was just not to be believed we sponsored there are snack bar for the
entire week
going off they were given free snacks for an entire week but usually they will
have to pay for and
Frankie put that together for us and
rallied it just it just kinda gone better yeah if that's a bad yeah
that we can set up a community outreach that we're looking to do further and
we think that's him the best way to help this station grow and but to really help
Long Beach City College become more the staple in the community
home using using radio so well we really are international because those shows
that we didn't as we get a whole week
shows that's weak for you just honored you know
veterans in love quite clearly and you know around the country hope for tuning
in
and the shows I will be recording on CDs and we put them
in care packages that are went to Afghanistan for the veterans
administration here on campus
so seriously our shows are over N
you know the middle east right now probably being heard by our men and
women
that we did in honor of them so home latinos want the core things never not
like I was super proud of that week
is really that was when I was in a great week for the station on our men and
women in uniform
yep wow that's fantastic now water
what is a time for your show none com his first
