Hi, I'm Eugene Toye, a hairstylist at
the Rita Hazan Hair Salon in New York City,
and today I'm gonna show you how to create a very chic,
sexy daytime updo.
So I'm just gonna concentrate at the root area.
You want a little bit of tackiness to the hair.
(music)
That's how I do it... money, money.
(music)
And I'm taking random pieces as well.
I'm not trying to get every single little piece so perfect.
By random, I also mean random sizes and winding them
in random directions as well.
I like to use the phrase "done to look undone."
(music)
And what you're trying to do is create
a little bit of packed hair over here.
And it makes it a little more pliable to work with.
Twirl it around the thumb.
I create a base in the back, like a knot,
and that's my support.
Now I can actually tuck pieces in there
and pin back pieces in there.
So in this case, I'm crisscrossing these two
and I'm just putting it into what I call
the "meat" of the support.
I'm not using any brushes right now.
I'm just using my fingers as a comb, and because
I'm doing that, it gives a very looser effect.
(music)
I would hit it with a stronger hairspray.
In this case, I'm using a Medium-Thick Pantene aerosol
hairspray and it's great just to give it that extra security.
After a couple of hours if this flattens down a little bit,
a little tail comb lift just to heighten it up
a little bit is nice.
You could use chopsticks, you could use a pen.
