UNICEF Hong Kong Donor visit to Yushu 21 to 24 September 2011
Leaving the airport, we are now heading for the quake-stricken area
Along the way, we can see that debris and rubble are still everywhere
There are many blue tents erected for temporary shelters for displaced people
It shows that the area is still under reconstruction
Ganda Village, Jiegu Town Child friendly space established on 19 September 2010
(Mr Dicky Yip, Council Member, UNICEF HK) Behind me is the child friendly space
funded by donations of Hong Kong people
When children’s parents are out for herding,
child friendly space can provide childcare service for children to receive education
Ganda Village, Jiegu Town Child friendly space established on 19 September 2010
Why UNICEF puts so much effort in establishing child friendly spaces
is because we hope that when there is natural disaster or emergency
the Government can ensure children's rights through child friendly spaces
by providing education
and a safe and caring environment to protect children
Apart from playing with toys
children can also attend classes
It is indeed a great pleasure to them
Please support UNICEF
Yushu People’s Hospital
(Mr Lee Chi Ming, Donor, UNICEF HK) The hospital in this county was completely destroyed by the earthquake
Fortunately, people here are able to rebuild a new one
Right next to me is one of the three ambulances
provided by UNICEF to support the new hospital
(Mr Wong Yiu Fai, Donor, UNICEF HK) This is the only ambulance covered by comprehensive insurance
protecting the interesets of both medical workers and patients
Hongwei Village, Jiegu Town
(Mr Leung Kwok Hin, Donor, UNICEF HK) The major work of UNICEF here
is to increase people’s awareness of hygiene and sanitation
by teaching them to clean latrines regularly
and to boil water before drinking
as well as promoting correct ways of handwashing
with an aim to improve the hygiene and sanitation
Qingshuihe Boarding School, Chengduo County
This school was once completely intact
However, it was damgamed by the earthquake
there are still water leakage and cracks on walls
The school is definitely unsafe for adults to stay, let alone children
Therefore, UNICEF rolled out various learning materials
and built new classrooms and staff rooms right after the disaster
UNICEF works very hard to help children in Yushu recover from the earthquake
But no matter how many visits and fundraising activities UNICEF organises
your support would be of utmost importance to the betterment of the lives of children
