So who belly dances? Is it just the woman? Hi, I'm Johanna Krynytzky from Hip Expressions
Belly Dance Studio in St. Petersburg, Florida. Let's talk about male belly dancing. Now,
it's not unusual to have male belly dancers. It's actually a very ancient tradition. If
you think about belly dancing as a cultural dance, this is not, this is something that
people would all get together and dance. It's a dance of celebration. So if you're have
a party, people would get up and dance. So all the basic isolations for male belly dancing
are pretty much the same as the way a woman would dance. Only done with a little more
of a stronger attitude, not quite so sensual. But it depends on the dancer. In part of Turkey
for awhile, the female belly dancers were actually outlawed. And you would find men
dressing up as woman and belly dancing. You'll also find this in parts of Morocco. You go
to see the belly dancer and she's not, she may not be showing her belly. And you watch
the dancer; you think it's great and it turns out at the end, it's actually a male belly
dancer. In Egypt, many of the male belly dancers are choreographers. So they will choreograph
all the female belly dancers. They will be teaching them, and showing them how to belly
dance and how to perform. And here in America, we have many different male belly dancers.
Choreographers, performers, we have some Latin American fusion belly dancers that will perform
with a more Latin style. So the shoner is wide open to suit a variety of different people
and their needs. You can combine the male belly dancing with ballet, Latin, jazz, how
ever you want to do it. Belly dancing is all about that personal interpretation in making
it fit your body and your needs and your art style. I'm Johanna Krynytzky with Hip Expressions
Belly Dance Studio talking about male belly dancing.
