Welcome to the West Virginia University at Parkersburg Library!
I'm going to demonstrate a simple search in ebrary,
a database that provides us with full-text electronic books.
ebrary can be accessed both on and off campus.
When you are on campus select "Electronic Books."
If you are off campus, Select "Off Campus Access" first. Then select "ebrary."
Enter the user name and password of your wvup email account.
To create an account, click on "sign in" and
enter the barcode that is on your WVUP library card.
On the simple search page, type your term in the search bar.
Let's look for books on careers,
more specifically on "consulting."
The database retrieved over 34 thousand records with the term
"consulting" embedded in them. In the "focus" frame,
make your search more relevant by choosing a predetermined subject.
I'll use this controlled language and select "consultants."
Click on search. Notice that I now have 60 documents.
This is still quite a lot to browse through. As I browse the titles,
I notice one that is very relevant to the subject that I am searching for.
Examine the subjects under a title that fits your search.
Choose one if it is appropriate. This will add precision to your search.
I'm going with business consultants. Notice that there are now
31 documents on the topic that I am searching.
You can use your account to create bookmarks and make notes,
and place books on your personal bookshelf. Add titles to your bookshelf with one easy click.
I want to explore
"Principles and Practices of Professional Consulting."
Open the book by clicking on the title.
In the quickview reader, you will see the book on the left,
and the table of contents on the right. You can navigate through the book by
selecting a chapter.
Let's explore Chapter 3. You can navigate through the pages
with the arrow icons.
Let's take a look at the toolbar.
Under infotools, you have the option to copy
or print small sections of the book.
To copy, highlight the text and select "copy" under infotools.
Use control C to copy text, take it to your document and use control V
to paste it
where you want it.
To print, choose the option that best fits your need: current page,
a page range with a maximum of 60 pages,or current chapter.
The magnifying glass icons
will take you to pages that contain your search term.
You can increase or reduce
the size of the font. Create bookmarks or notes for your next ebrary session.
Your notes will be stored. View them by clicking on the notes tab
tab or bookshelf tab. When you are done,
please "sign out" to end your session.
