Hey, our little porch is lookin' like another room, which is what it's all about. We're
blurring the lines between inside and out. Let me show you what I mean. They say an eco-friendly
house can't be built in 150 days for $150,000, and I say it can. I'm Allen Smith, join me
as I push the limits with time, budget and creativity with the Garden Home Challenge,
exclusively on eHow Home. You know, I'm just checkin' on these doors because they promised
me none of this spray paint was gonna get on anything. You know, they've done a good
job of putting up plastic. For instance, we did–well, Marcus did a nice job on our brick
work here. So they put this plastic on. Now that they've painted the winds kind of blowing
it away. But I think it's really important to try and protect your materials when things
like paint. And, as you know, we just did all the insulation, foam insulation, and we
sprayed it all upstairs. And, you know, if that stuff sticks onto something it's really
hard, if not impossible, to get off. If you look over here, this door here is completely
closed up. You see what a nice job they did of taping around the edges of it. Put the
plastic there, so they could come in here and put the primer coat of paint. And so we're
just going with a basic primer coat. You can see that Tony's put the rafters in for the
back porch here. And he's trimming it out with a MiraTECH. That's that product that's
got a wood fiber base but has other elements in it. It has a warranty of 40 to 50 years.
And so this is what was used on the front. So this porch is really kind of a scaled down
model of the front porch. Columns will be smaller. The porch itself is smaller. This
porch is only 16 feet long and 12 feet out. And we're not even covering the full 12 feet.
We're only covering the first 8 feet of it. So now what's going to happen is as soon as
Tony finishes up this, he gets his two columns in place. We're only gonna use two columns
out here. We're gonna go with a 5 by 5 post, similar to what we did on the front. And then,
the final coat up here on the ceiling is gonna be a pale sky blue. And the reason for that
is that if you go with a pale blue, insects envision that as being infinity or the sky,
and they're less likely to make nests. So things like dirt daubers and wasps don't tend
to like on anything that's pale blue. So that's what the color will be up here, both on this
porch and on the back porch. Now our floor, I'm just gonna leaves this alone. We're not
gonna paint it. We're gonna paint the front porch, but this floor is going to be left
just to weather. At least, that's what I'm thinking so far. So the next step out here
will be to get the rail around, the post up and some set of steps going down on the side.
Hey, if you're enjoying following our progress on the house, check-in regularly. We got lots
of fun things going on and we're moving along really quickly. Tell a friend about what we're
doing, and subscribe to eHow Home. Okay, so Tony, you about ready to start puttin' your
posts up?
