Hello people of the internet! Welcome to MIGaming. Today I will be showing you guys a unboxing
of the WD Western Digital My Book 3TB. While I personally wouldn't be very interested
in making a video about a hard drive, since well it's not really gaming related. I did
wanted to make time making this video, because recently we have been seeing a lot of hard
drives starting to use USB 3.0. And a lot of people might not actually know
what it is, and even the people that do know what it is, might not really know how well
it performs. So let's open this and see how it performs.
So let's start with the unboxing. I know a knife, I know I shouldn't use it. Let's do
this gently, yep. So let's give you guys a quick backstory.
I have a few hard drives already, and all of them have been western digital WD. So I'm
very used to the brand, and they seem very reliable for me, and I never had any problems
with them. So let's hope I can say the same of this one.
And let's continue. Ow, I found it. So well let's show it like
this. We have the papers, interesting *cough*So well let's start with that, we have a warranty
guide, well we never read it. And my voice cracked up, we never read it,
so well let's put it there. A simple guide about I don't care, My Book
Quick Guide. While...well let's be honest, while we never
really read manuals, I do like it when companies make it simple, just simple. Anyways let's
just throw it at the side. Erhm here we have the cable, the USB 3.0.
You can recognize a USB 3.0 at its color. Most companies actually make the inside of
the USB blue. And also at the other side you can usually see... Let's focus it here, yep..
this kind of connector. So they use this side, and for connecting it to something like the
computer they have the blue USB's. I hope that focused, anyways we all know how a USB
looks. So let's put that here. And a power supply, which actually seems very small compared
to my other power supplies, so that's pretty nice. And let's get to the hard drive itself.
So it's a hard drive that stands up right, well stands up. And ow I love doing this part.
I don't know why but I allows enjoy doing this.
Let's throw this at the side. So here we have the hard drive, what I do notice is that,
while the finish looks pretty nice, it's glossy and it's going to be a fingerprint magnet.
Which kind of sucks. But it's still looks nice, aside from that we can notice that hard
drive does have a lot of ventilation parts. There seems to be a lot of gaps in it, so
that means this hard drive won't really head up that fast. Which is a good thing, but at
the other side it might be a dust magnet. But well, you can't have one without the other.
So well, what can I really show you guys ,well the power connector, and the USB connector.
And there seems to be an on-of switch. Which you probably won't really use.
So that's about it, and let's get in to the most important thing, how well it performs.
So see you guys in a minute. So guys as you can tell, we're at my computer.
And before I connect the hard drive, I going to give you a very quick explanation of the
difference between the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. So the difference between them is actually
their speed. The USB 2.0 was able to use a maximum speed of 480 megabits per second,
which is about 60 megabytes per second. (60MB/s). And the new USB 3.0 is actually able to use
4.8 gigabits per second, which is about 600 megabytes per second. (600MB/s)
So, the speed on paper is actually 10 times as fast, but seeing that there are a lot of
factors that actually change the performance of the hard drive and the connection. You
won't really see those kinds of speeds, but still you should be able to have a huge improvement
between the two. So let's connect the hard drive and check it out.
So now I have connected the hard drive, and as you can tell Western Digital hard drives
(WD) come with a few programs. These programs actually allow you to make auto backups of
your files. But seeing as I won't be using these programs, I will be deleting them from
the hard drive. But for the people who want to have auto backups, it's nice to know Western
Digital (WD) did include it. As you can tell I've renamed the hard drive
to MIGaming slash Mister Ikaruka (MrIkaruka) because I will be using this hard drive for
gameplay footage, and clips for my YouTube Channels. So let's get to the test.
So the file that I will be transferring to the hard drive is the video clip of my latest
Pikmin 3 Review. It should be about 4 gigabytes as you can
tell. Yea. And I'm going to first transfer it through USB 3.0, so let's check it out.
Details, and as you can see it's going at a speed of about a 130, 150, 140, it's fluctuating,
but it's going at around 140 megabytes per second (140MB/s). So that's pretty fast compared
to my old hard drives, so when this is finished I will be transferring the same file to the
same hard drive through USB 2.0 and let's see how big the difference is.
So now I'm using the USB 2.0, and as you can tell there is a huge speed difference, it's
about well, it's about 50 megabytes per second. (50MB/s). But anyways let's cancel it, because
I don't really need this file on there at this moment.
So we can conclude there is a big difference between a hard drive that uses USB 3.0 and
USB 2.0. While the improvement might not really be ten times as fast in reality, there is
still a big difference. So if you are interested in buying a new hard drive you might want
to spend those few extra bucks. Because well it is faster, and it's pretty much becoming
the new standard. And if you are a gamer, and intend to buy either a playstation 4 (PS4)
or Xbox One. They both will be using it, so if you want to buy one of those consoles and
connect a hard drive, it might be worth spending those few extra bucks too. So well, what else?
That was pretty much it. So I hope you liked the video, if you did please hit the like
button, and if you want to see more please subscribe to my channel. This was MIGaming
and I'll see you guys later.
