AccessPoint Kft presents:
In association with the National Meteorological Service
and the National Media and Telecommunication Authority
Counter interference in the 5GHz band.
The weather radars are the primary users of the 5600-5650MHz frequency range while WISP equipments are tertiary users.
This means that tertiary users can not interfere with the primary user.
The radar has a sensory range radius of 240km. This is the distance where it has to detect clouds.
The WISP equipments that operate in this frequency range are causing major interference to the radar.
We are a member of an international organization called the OPERA which is a program sponsored by the EU Metnet.
We have 4 weather radars in Hungary and we send all of their data to the OPERA
But the Budapest radar isn't displayed in the OPERA composite image because it has way too much interference.
My collagues have located 43 interfering equipment in this frequency range last year
We already surpassed this amount in the first 5 months of this year
So we had to upgrade our locating/measuring technologies which means more measuring vechicles,
more personel and more dedicated measurement hours in order to track the interfering devices.
We are facing 200-250 sources of interference currently. We start locating these by adding filters to the radar image
to find the areas where the interference is coming from, so that we can send out specially equipped vehicles
These feature a dedicated direction sensing antenna which can detect the sources direction
and when we can no longer track it with our vehicles, than my collagues can pinpoint the interference source using handheld devices.
In case the operator changes the frequency of the equipment so it no longer causes interference on the spot
we are closing this case as well.
If the operator does not follow the rules and also hinders our work than we can issue a fine
which can be 10.000 HUF - 1.000.000 HUF in case of private users, and 50.000 HUF - 10.000.000 HUF in case of business users.
If the operators are reluctant in their behaviour and fail to cooparate even after the first warning/penalty
than it is our duty to fine both the company and it's CEO in which case the fine will be a multiplied version of the original fee.
Our radars use only 1-2 MHz of spectrum, so if the nominal frequency of the radar is 5620MHz
than the radar is detecting in the 5619-5621MHz range
if the noise generated is not within this range, than it won't cause any interference.
The weather radar has no real option to change it's frequency up or down
The WISP equipment have a wide range of frequency - more than 20 bands - to operate.
So our goal is to prevent the use of only the channel, where the radar operates.
Our basic goal is not to prevent the WISP equipment from operation, but to ensure a peaceful cooperation.
