Hi. In this clip, we're going to demonstrate the basic footwork in Manipuri dance. The
positions of the feet are as follows. The first one is feet together like this. It's
called "shau-mau". That's the neutral position. Next, you're going to put your heel out in
front. This position is called "anchita." Next, you're going to cross the ball of your
foot in front of your standing leg. This is called "kunchita." Next, you're going to point
your working leg in front of your standing leg. This is called "suchi." Then, you're
going to take the ball of your foot and you're going to place it next to the arch of your
standing leg and you're going to bend your standing leg. This is called "agretta-lish-anshara."
Those are all the positions of the feet. So, altogether, we start "shau-mau", "anchita",
"kunchita", "suchi", "agretta-lish-anshara", then "shau-mau" again to finish. The thing
to remember about footwork is to use the energy in the feet to press off of the floor. So,
don't just be very soft and touching your foot on the floor. You really can press your
feet together on the floor to make really nice positions that are defined. And really,
these are what's going to help you move in space.
