Data released by Statistics Korea on Wednesday shows that the number of newly employed workers
in Korea rose at its fastest pace in 12 years in February,... showing signs of improvement
in the local economy. Kim Ji-yeon reports. The Korean economy may
be showing signs of improvement. The number of newly employed workers rose
at its fastest pace in more than a decade last month.
Statistics Korea says the number of those employed in February stood at 24-point-8-million,...up
835-thousand from a year earlier. The figure represents the largest on-year
job growth since March 2002. The country's unemployment rate, however,
shot up to 4-point-5-percent, a half-a-percentage-point increase from the same period last year.
In fact, the number of those unemployed stood at one-point-two-million in February... the
highest level in two years. The state-run agency points to an increase
in the number of young people seeking jobs for the seemingly contradicting figures...
that show an increase in both the number of newly employed workers and unemployed people.
Those in their 20s, who are new college graduates, are now searching for work ahead of recruitment
season, which runs from late February to April this year.
