Hi, I'm Albert Marques. I teach Spanish here at Gavilan College.
I want to talk a little bit about a program that we have here at Gavilan
College. It's a program where we study abroad.
How would it feel to travel 7,000 miles across the world,
take a taxi to some strange house,
knock on the door and have some strange person open it and invite you in for a month?
And that's how your adventure begins.
Hi, I'm David Pérez. I am a Spanish professor here a Gavilan College.
I'm here really to recruit students to our incredible, phenomenal
immersion program,
where we take students to go live for one month in Seville, Spain.
So I hope you really
listen to what we have to offer here and really
take that adventure, take that leap forward and
really expand your cultural horizons.
I was really excited about this opportunity
because it's a long period of time. It's four-weeks!
And I've never been alone traveling for four weeks.
You wouldn't really be alone
but, you know, you'd be with a group of friends, so you'll be with them.
But, you know, you really get to like, really absorb the culture.
And my Spanish did get better! Yeah.
Well, Rose was one of the only ones that just did her own thing.
And so every night I'd be like, "Where's Rose?" and they're like, "We don't know."
But come to find out she was hanging out with the Spanish people every night. I was in it.
I was in it. Yeah. Which was really cool because
you could learn as much Spanish or as little Spanish as you want when you go.
It's up to you. Yeah. If you want to go and find American speakers you're going to find them.
But you chose to hang out with the Spaniards, and I thought that was really cool
Yeah, and I'll tell you another secret, well, it's not really a secret.
The college has an apartment
and it's next door to, well it was next door. I think you have a new building now.
But, like, some of the, I guess the wayfaring students, you know the students who
are going to be there for two or three weeks or
just a short period of time, they put them in this 4 or 5 bedroom apartment.
And so I would go to this 4 or 5 bedroom apartment and
the people would change every day. It's like, "Oh, where are you from?" You know.
It's so funny because you get to do that first lesson in Spanish.
"Se llama Rose." du, du, du, du... You know.
It was just funny because you just got to meet so many different people.
If somebody was at Gavilan College, or somebody, just, anybody,
and they were considering going, what would you say to them?
And granted we're talking either from somebody from 18 years old to
80 years. What would you say to someone if they're considering going?
Go!
Okay. Go!
It's pretty amazing
to see the students and the experiences they have,
and how they grow, and how they improve with their Spanish,
and then the friends they make. And that's why we love this program so much.
Los esperamos y esperamos que lo pasen
rete bien con nosotros en Sevilla, España.
Chiaou. Hasta luego.
Vamos a España.
