Hey guys, this is Heather from healthyeatingstartshere.com – just hanging out with this gorgeous bunch
of kale here. I got at the local farmer’s market this weekend. I find – my only problem
in going to the farmer’s market is that I come home with so many vegetables and I
want to eat them all right away because they’re pretty delicious.
And, I also want to eat them as freshly as possible. But, I also want them to last as
long as possible because the farmer’s market here is only open once a week, but overall
I love going to the markets. You can get some really high quality fresh produce, which is
such an important part of a healthy diet.
There in that quality is really-really important. The amount of nutrients in the amount of kale
that you would buy there at the small organic farm is totally different from the kale that
you got form the grocery store – even when it’s organic, when it’s selling on a large
scale like that – totally different level of nutrients.
So, a lot of you have been asking me about how to keep produce fresh and since on my
mind with this week with my bounty from the market, I thought I would share with you a
few tips on the blog.
And like I said, quality food, really important basic for quality diet and I’ve been going
over some other really important stuff about healthy diet in a series of videos that are
free on website. But, you have to head over there and check them out.
So, go to healthyeatingstartshere.com/awesome and you can watch that. So, with my kale,
what I do – any greens that comes as a stem like kale, or chard, or fresh herbs, I got
some of those as well. I got some parsley and pretty much the most beautiful basil I’ve
ever seen since last year when Phil had it growing in our garden. We don’t have a garden
here unfortunately, byt that’s okay because there’s the market.
So, when I get home with this stuff – the kale, and the herbs or anything with the stem
I’m going to out in a little vase of water and this is just my drinking glass. So, you
can see the stems and when you get them from the market, they’re kind of dried and not
receptive to the water.
So, what I do is just chopped them off, just like what I would with the flowers and then
they can absorbed the water, stick them in there and I did the same thing with the fresh
herbs, they’re in a little glass of water here.
Now, it’s been really-really hot a round here like upwards to 30 and 35 degrees, so
I’ve been keeping these actually in the fridge in their little glasses, which I only
trouble I have with the kale is that it’s so massive and gorgeous but it’s very difficult
to fit in my fridge, so I have it hanging out at the door of the fridge right now.
Otherwise, leave it in the water, they’ll try to wilt a little bit. So those are my
tips for stem vegetables and you can check out a couple more tips at my website at healthyeatingstartshere.com.
And I want to hear from you guys, what tips you have, you have any miraculous cures for
keeping produce fresh, let me know and be sure to also check all those videos for more
info on healthy diet at healthyeatingstartshere.com/awesome.
