My social highlight in first year was definitely freshers. You meet so many different people
and you're offered so many different opportunities to get involved in different things. I'd say
to anyone that your first term is the best time that you're going to ever have. It's
just so sociable. There is something at the SU, like, every night. It was every night
for me. In freshers we went out all the time.
It was a complete blur. I mean, it kicked off with a big night out. It's so different
to anything you've probably experienced back at home. Most student unions have got their
own club and there's something for everyone. The Fancy Dress Night really stands out for
me. Beach parties, zombie nights, they did Twin Night, we went as 118s.
It's okay, like I said, nice little club. And there's so much going on, and there's
lot of different societies you could even get involved in it and those also provide
social opportunities. I went down to a performing art society, I got involved with a baking
society weirdly enough, not something I thought I'd do. I'm doing the London to Paris bike
ride which is a big challenge in itself but also a challenge to get fundraising for it
as well.
That's something I definitely wouldn't have thought I'd be doing. All the sports team
are quite fun to get involved, they do a lot of socials afterwards as well, and you get
to know the teams. The cinema, the film club, that's really cool. And being a student rep
as well. There's absolutely lots of offer. It's nice to do something as well with your
extra time in your first year because you've got a lot of free time. What you get out of
it is what you put into it.
Everyone's in the same boat. You meet all these new people, everyone's really excited
to be at university, and the opportunities that you have to go out and meet different
people and have lots of different experiences. It's overwhelming really. I think it's definitely
something that everyone should experience because you mix with so many different people
and you wouldn't even think that you'd meet half of them.
And then there's the Freshers' fair and getting involved in all of that, it's fantastic. We
got bottle openers, things like that, random, really cool. Lollipops, and sweets. You have
so many people there, all trying to sell you their clubs and societies or their event.
I got a piggy bank. I got a discount card for a stationary shop. Definitely, definitely
take advantage of that.
Do as little or as much as you want. If you want to do lots, do it. You do what you feel
comfortable doing. It's definitely the best part of being at uni.
