The 2012 California Governor’s Historic Preservation Awards were presented on November
29th at Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park in Sacramento. There were a total of
11 projects or individuals that received awards. What follows is the presentation made at the
awards ceremony about one of the 2012 award winners. Leo Carrillo Ranch Barn Stabilization
and Restoration Project The Leo Carrillo Ranch historic wood plank hay barn is just one component
of a once massive working rancho and homestead. As a retreat for actor, philanthropist, poet,
preservationist, and rancher Leo Carrillo from 1937 to 1961, Rancho de los Quiotes (Ranch
of the Spanish Daggers) is situated approximately 35 miles north of San Diego on the Pacific
Coast. For Carrillo, the rancho represented a tangible connection to his proud Spanish
ancestry and reinforced his image as a real vaquero or cowboy. Now owned and managed by
the City of Carlsbad, Los Quiotes is currently a 27-acre historic park that contains many
of the original historic structures and outbuildings associated with Leo Carrillo’s tenure at
the ranch. The project consisted of a stabilization phase followed by the restoration, which involved
building the barn out to a theatre concept consistent with the Leo Carrillo Ranch Park
Master Plan. It received a Save America’s Treasures grant, and the City of Carlsbad
put up more than 2 to 1 in matching funds. The project has had a tremendously positive
impact on the community, as thousands of visitors each year, including hundreds of schoolchildren,
will have the opportunity to visit and tour the restored barn to learn about Leo Carrillo
and his ranch through interpretive exhibits, film, and television. Congratulations to all
the winners of the 2012 California Governor’s Historic Preservation Awards. Please view
