Hey guys so I just wanted to talk to you guys today about tanning oils and why they are
not good and why you shouldn't use them. We are nearing the end of this project, this
video is actually going to segue into my next videos which is a 2 video series on the dangers
of tanning beds. I'm so excited to do like obviously it is pretty bad thing, but like
I'm so excited to do the videos on them because I feel like those will be really helpful and
I feel like they'll reach a lot of people and save a lot of lives, because tanning beds
are I think on of the number one reasons that melanoma is still around. A couple things
before I get started, I'm screening an amazing documentary called More Than Skin Deep. That
is gonna be coming up around sometime in November or December. so be looking for the announcement
about that I'm gonna make a video so tanning oils okay I don't have a problem with tanning
oils like the product I have a problem with how people use them. so tanning oils, when
you go to buy sunscreen, at least at like Walgreen's and Target that I've been to, when
you go to buy sunscreens, the tanning oils are also there, so I think it gives people
the idea that it is a good sunscreen or whatever, but I've actually made the same mistake, um
we went to the Bahamas and I was like, oh I wanna get a tan, I was like 12 so...ugh
embarrassing, but we went to the Bahamas and I only used tanning oil, and I came back with
like the worst sunburn of my life, like I don't even know how to explain it to you like
my whole back like all the skin was peeling and it was like crazy omigosh it hurt so bad
so it definitely did not protect me from the sun rays and I like layed out and like baked,
I don't know what I was thinking. I obviously didn't have this sunscreen passion that I
have now. So yeah. Worst sunburn of my life only using tanning oils the same for the rest
of my family we all only used tanning oils because like us Illinois, Midwestern people
we were like Oh we are gonna come back so tan and people are going to be jealous. No.
They were just laughing because we looked like lobsters, but that is my problem with
tanning oils. people use them like a sunscreen myself included back then, I'd never do that
now. People use them as a sunscreen and I think they get the idea because they are in
the same place as the sunscreen is and they are marketed like a sunscreen, they have the
SPF, and they're like for outdoor exposure obviously and it kind of gives people the
idea that it is gonna help them get bronze, but also protect them. Like I don't know how
much they feel it is going to protect them. but I know that they think that it is going
to make them more brown and a lot of people say like Oh I burn then I tan. but no, that
is really dangerous 1 bad sunburn before age 18 increases your risk of melanoma by a lot.
I think like 50% I'll cite that down below, but just thinking about how many sunburns
I've had in my life, it is crazy to think about. I just want you guys to be aware that
tanning oil is not sunscreen it should not be used as sunscreen and I can't even think
of a reason you should use it, maybe over the sunscreen you're wearing? I don't even
know, but make sure if you're gonna buy a tanning oil, it has at least some SPF in it
and try to make it UVA and UVB so it is broad spectrum, try to follow all the sunscreen
rules for it, I don't even know how to suggest it to you guys. If you are deciding between
a tanning oil and a sunscreen you should absolutely pick a sunscreen and yeah I know, I'll try
to make this sound as good as I can, but everyone says that they go tanning outside and in tanning
beds because spray tans are expensive but if you think about it, having skin cancer
will cost a lot more than a spray tan. And embrace the skin that you have, because you
are born this was and made this way and you are supposed to look the way that you are
and if you want to change that it is fine, but you shouldn't harm your health, you shouldn't
risk dying just so you can be tan and just so you can be "pretty" and just so that you
can be like other people and you should embrace who you are because you are beautiful the
way you are and no matter what your skin tone is and I think tanning oils are a no. and
I think tanning in general is a no. And you'll see next week how tanning in tanning beds
is a definite no, so thank you guys so much for watching, I don't know how informative
this video was, but like yeah thanks so much, I'll see you guys soon. Bye!
